The results are in from the 2004 Tesoro Iron Dog snowmobile race and the winner is the team of Mark Carr and Dusty VanMeter. The team finished first out of 25 teams with a time of 39 hours and three minutes in the 2,000-mile race across Alaska. They had to face subzero cold, bad visibility and deep snow for the longest snowmobile race in the world.
The race started Feb. 16 at Pine's Landing in Fairbanks, Alaska and finished five days later in Big Lake, Alaska. Only 12 of the 25 teams finished the race. The purpose of the race is to provide reliable, consistent, safe and honorable cross country snowmobile racing and recreational riding in Alaska. It is a team race consisting of two people and two snowmobiles. Prize money for the race came to a total of $90,000.
