For 2001, Polaris takes the EDGE chassis technology all the way down to the Super Sport 550. Always a great economy sled- with the new chassis it's an even greater value. Plus it's got Polaris' 544cc fan-cooled powerplant- the largest fan-cooled mill from any of the big four.
The EDGE seat, chassis and suspension is all new on the SS for 2001. The EDGE Front Suspension offers 10" of travel, while the EDGE skidframe allows up to 13.9" of rear travel.
Across the board, all test riders commented how EDGE sleds were comfortable to ride and handled very well. "This is a totally different sled than the Super Sport we had in our long term test fleet two winters ago," said Test Rider Jerry Bassett. "The engine seems stronger and it's more nimble feeling than the '99."
Polaris also provides its SS buyers with several available options. To keep costs down, Polaris left you without a tach. It's available, but as a dealer accessory- you'll have to pay for it. To further ensure the sled's price point, Polaris keeps the Super Sport on steel skis.
You can add the tach, electric start, reverse, electric fuel gauge and mirrors- along with any other cosmetic accessories, like plastic skis, skid plates and colored trim to create your own custom sled. Regardless, even what you get on the basic model with no add-ons is sufficient for a long day on the trails. A good overall value, the SS is an ideal sled for learning how to ride or just leisurely cruising the trails. The reed-inducted engine was all new in 1999 and had excellent fuel economy averaging over 17 miles per gallon on our test unit that year. Combine that with the 11.8 gallon fuel tank for great range.
