The man who brought snowmobiling its first twin-tracked production sleds is about to try it again.
Bob Bracey played a big role in getting the Raider and Manta twin-tracked sleds to market in the 1970s and 1980s. Through Michigan-based Three R Industries, Bracey plans to bring a new twin-tracked, sit-in snowmobile to market this winter.
His timing might be right on the money as this new concept calls for a "green" sled using a low-emission, moderate power Kohler 4-stroke engine. Bracey says the Trail Roamer will be the first "green" snowmobile as its Kohler engine will meet the California Air Research Board requirements, giving consumers a smokeless, quiet and economical trail machine.
While the engine's overall horsepower is modest by today's standards, the Kohler was chosen for its high torque capabilities.
Kohler's 725cc V-twin offers electronic fuel injection as an option, which is a plus for the niche of snowmobilers Bracey expects to respond to the Trail Roamer. The four-stroke, Kohler is air-cooled with fully pressurized lubrication.
Performance parameters for the Trail Roamer call for a top speed in the 50 to 60 miles per hour range. That puts it on a par with a Jag 440 or IndyTrail Sport.
Handling-wise you should expect a level of performance that is totally unique. Previous Bracey-built twin-tracked snowmobiles like the original Manta, while down in power to contemporary sports sleds, were up-tempo intheir overall handling agility- cornering, steering effort and maneuverability.
Similar to the Manta and the Raider, the Trail Roamer features a pair of tracks in the rear, each mounted on an independent skidframe. The rails are made from extruded aluminum, and the remainder of the components willbe stainless steel. Both skids will offer 8.5 inches of travel, utilizing Gabriel shocks and coil over springs.
A unique feature is the suspension seat. "An additional three inches of travel will be offered by the spring and shock suspended seat, similar to what semi trucks use," explains Bracey.
Up front, look for the Roamer to use UHMW plastic skis set at 43 inches, with a rack and pinion-type steering mechanism.
