After the changes that Ski-Doo made to the SC-10 rear suspension this season, we've fallen in love with the Zx chassis. And our favorite of favorites is the new 700cc powered versions. While we really like the base "Ski-Doo yellow" MX Z because of its traditional styling, the sled we'd own is the Formula Deluxe 700. It's essentially all MX Z but with more style points and more user conveniences.
For the real macho dudes who cruise the snowpack for that one hot mile of riding a weekend, there's the mogul masher. For veteran riders who look at all miles over the weekend and want each of them to be memorable, there's the personal luxury sled. This Ski-Doo takes the MX Z a couple of steps up the luxury ladder.
The Formula Deluxe 700 is built on the same platform as the MX Z 700. It shares the same new cylinder reed, RAVE exhaust valved twin. Where it departs from the MX Z is in the ride and control department.
You get softer sprung gas shocks on the trailing arm front suspension instead of the firmer high-pressure shocks of the MX Z. And the SC-10 II rear unit on the Deluxe edition is a softer riding version with Ski-Doo's Motion Control gas shocks. Yes, there is a trade-off here. Softer ride for traveling lots of groomed miles or extra firm for the more mogul "beater" trails.
We'll pick the Deluxe and its more moderate settings. We'll also pick it for the amenities like rear view mirrors, electric start and reverse gear (mechanical not electronic) and little luxury touches.
But, make no mistake about it- and don't let any MX Z rider flip his visor at you. The Formula Deluxe 700 can wail. It can handle the tough stuff and it can cover the miles. This ain't you're pappy's personal luxury sled. It's MX Z bred. And it's our favorite high mile solo cruiser!
