If you're looking for a good value in personal snowmobiling, you'll find good choices to suit you. Especially in the 500cc fan-cooled arena where you have Yamaha's Vmax-based Phazer and Polaris' revitalized Super Sport and Ski-Doo's Formula 500 with its reliable 497cc Rotax twin.
The Deluxe version of Ski-Doo's 500 fan sled is worth the bucks since it comes with the nifty push button electronic reverse and electric start. Add in rearview mirrors and standard hand and thumb warmers.
What you don't get in the lower end fan sled is the new ZX chassis and the newest SC-10 II rear suspension. The use of the older chassis and more basic SC-10 Sport suspension with its 10-inches of travel makes the 2000 Formula 500 fan-cooled model closer competition to the Polaris than the current Phazer.
But what you get in the current Ski-Doo ain't bad. The 503 series motor is about as bulletproof as it gets with its piston port and high torque exhaust performance. Combined with Rotax cushion drive clutching, the Formula 500 will prove solidly reliable with strong 0-40 miles per hour acceleration to get you up to normal trail cruising speeds adequately enough.
Ski-Doo does a very nice job in standard ergonomics, which is a strong suit of the Deluxe model. That alone makes it a proper choice.
