Polaris' Rocky Mountain King (RMK) already has a legion of fans in deep snow country. Add another legion of merit with the inclusion of a torque-happy twin thumper in the engine bay.
American Snowmobiler test rider Doug Erickson gives the new twin strong marks. "I was really impressed with the new 800cc twin cylinder case reed engine. For such a big twin cylinder engine, noise and vibration are very low. You'd think that it would be a big vibrating engine at idle, but it wasn't. It was very docile."
The big twin is based on Polaris' 700 crankcase but comes in with an approximate 10 percent increase in peak horsepower over that US-built twin.On that basis we'd guesstimate the 800's power to be in the 130-ish horsepower bracket. As Doug notes, the 800's torque is commensurate with its added power. "This thing pulled so hard that it yanked the front end up.It almost made it hard to see where I was going."
This sled will be a very limited build with deep snow riders in mind.Hence it has a trick adjustable width front suspension and 136-inch track with two-inch paddles. Two inch taller handlebars and a powder grab strap are standard.
As Doug notes, "It's the high altitudes where the 800cc engine will really shine."
