Last year, D&D began pushing its pipe/ chip combo for either the 500 or 600 EFI sleds. Co-Owner Dan Roes masterminds the reprogramming of the sled's EFI chip to achieve performance gains over the stock chip. "It probably takes us 80 to 100 hours to develop a chip for a particular sled," he said. "We sit at the dyno and test, making one change at a time to the map, ensuring we have the best performance at that particular point." As a point of reference, Arctic Cat's EFI program takes the temperature, barometric pressure, engine speed and throttle position into consideration when it calculates how much fuel/air mixture to shoot into the engine. That's a complex 4-D map to create!
Dan's brother, and Co-Owner, Dale is the brains behind the cylinder porting. "We have been starting out with a base custom casted cylinder and make some port timing changes to optimize the performance with our EFI system," he said. "Carburetted and EFI engines need different porting to maximize performance for each fuel delivery system." Once D&D grinds out the ports to his specs, the cylinders get sent out for replating, and get polished upon their return.
The 700 EFI kit will be based on the 500 EFI stock sled because of its low price. "Most of our customers like to have their sleds look as stock as possible," Dale commented. "So we will be using a 500 head and just grind it to the necessary dimensions. We will also be leaving the stock graphic package intact. Owners will have a real sleeper when they pull up on the lake or at the base of the hill."
