Ski-Doo MX Z 440F
Ski-Doo's fan-cooled racer is designed to be an economical introductory machine for the wannabe racer. It has been consistently taking amateur and semi-pro class checkered flags for the past couple seasons. When something works that well, what sense does it make to change it? Not much. So 'Doo has basically left this scooter alone for '99.

The MX Z 440F is powered by a 437cc Rotax twin with 34mm Mikuni carbs.A single pipe leads to a nicely quiet, tuned spiral muffler. The whole lightweight package comes in at 442 factory pounds, the lightest in the class.

Up front, the Direct Shock Action trailing arm suspension uses equal-length radius rods. It's not the most current technology, but it saves dollars at the dealership. Motion Control gas shocks keep the 7.7 inches of travel smooth and dependable. The plastic flex skis, outfitted with 'Doo's new Proactive Control System, are set at ISR-specified 41 inches. The PCS keele rases ruts left in the trail by other sleds, thus eradicating the darting issue.

Under the seat, the SC-10 Sport offers 10 inches of travel. The falling rate design gives riders more suspension resistance at the beginning ofthe travel, and softens up toward the bottom. This design works especially well for the younger, lighter rider who normally doesn't bottom out. A tandem of High Pressure Gas and Motion Control gas shocks keep the skidframe under control throughout its movement and also keep the price low.
