At American Snowmobiler, we take our "Snowmobile of the Year" selections very seriously. We have been known to agonize over the selection, such as Cat's Prowler over the Phazer II or, last year, the Venture XL over the Pantera. This year we had the luxury of the Yamaha Vmax-4. It was an obvious choice as far back as last March when we first rode the photo sled in the Montana mountains. We were pretty certain of our selection back then. But, we would wait to see how the season went.
Well, over the course of 1991-92, the Yamaha Vmax-4 upheld its part of the selection process. It was unique in snowmobiling. While it didn't prove to be the fastest of the fast in our annual "Battle of Old Forge," Yamaha's Vmax-4 set the tone for a new jump in sled technology with a grouping of features not found in any other production snowmobile to this date. Set aside the fact that the Vmax-4 has the most unique, most powerful, and largest displacement engine in a production trail sled. With 743cc from its four cylinders, the Vmax-4 was the power master for 1992. Still, it was the little things that made this sled a favorite of our American Snowmobiler selection committee. It is the first production sled with lightweight metal skis and plastic bottoms. It is the first production sled to use multiple flat slide carbs and "motorcycle" rack throttle set-up which gives the rider an easy pull at the thumb.
A performance king on the snow and across the lakes, the Vmax-4 is equally at home in the mountains and dawdling on a long tour.
The Yamaha Vmax-4 is a winning snowmobile from a company that has decided to let its gift for technology speak for its commitment to the future of Yamaha in snowmobiling. In addition, Yamaha as a company has relocated its operations in a new midwestern complex. Critical matters concerning Yamaha snowmobiles of the future will be conducted in Minnesota and networked to each and every Yamaha dealer and owner in the American snowbelt. In fact, another aspect of the Vmax-4 has been the support given to consumers. Yamaha appears to be setting new standards in ownership of its premium snowmobile. Special technical seminars for Vmax-4 owners were conducted. Owners of Vmax-4 models are valued customers and Yamaha seems to be taking first class care of them.
In addition, as one Yamaha marketing person pointed out, the Vmax-4 has made every other model in the Yamaha line just that much faster. And better selling!
We are pleased to announce the Yamaha Vmax-4 as American Snowmobiler's 1992 Snowmobile Of The Year.
