1990 polaris indy 400 xc

Polaris Industries isn't sitting around waiting for Arctic Cat to win another International 500 cross country race. The Roseau racers are planning an attack of their own with the new Indy 400XC. The name is actually a little misleading since the engine is a new 440cc liquid-cooled twin - not a hopped up 400. Production on this new ditch racer is scheduled for the fall.

This is a sled for serious cross country racers. It has a 38 inch ski stance, a heavy duty torsion bar, Polaris IFS with lightweight, chromoly trailing arms, front gas pressurized emulsion shocks and chrome silicone springs. The rear suspension features a gas pressurized, internal floating piston (IFP) shock with a chrome silicone progressive rate spring on the reinforced front torque arm. The rear torque arm shock is also gas pressurized IFP.

Carbide runners, Kevlar reinforced 121 inch full block pattern track and a fourth idler wheel are also standard. This sled comes with tunnel wear strips already installed.

Claimed to be the lightest sled in its class, the 400XC uses a new 440cc liquid, with dual 38mm Mikuni carbs. The high stress of racing has been considered on the brakes. Polaris equips this sled with its exclusive liquid-cooled hydraulic brake system. Screens on the hood intake louvers provide additional protection from snow ingestion. A tether switch is standard as are hand warmers and a thumb warmer.

Although the sled has yet to be certified, Polaris believes that the 400XC will be certified to race against the Prowler Specials and MX racers.
