The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) 7th annual Clean Snowmobile Challenge will be March 13-18 at Michigan Technological University (MTU) in Houghton, Mich. It is an intercollegiate engineering design competition that challenges engineering students to develop a prototype snowmobile that meets the 2012 standards for exhaust emissions and noise output.
More than 150 students from 15 universities will be participating. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is the defending champion. Three teams plan to field electric-powered snowmobiles, while 13 have entered machines equipped with internal combustion engines.
The snowmobile manufacturers are gold sponsors of the event and partcipate in reviewing and judging many of the events.
