Hey guys, I am riding an 05 King Cat right now, but am looking into getting into an M chassis. I am about 6-3, 250 pounds + with gear on. An M 1000 is probably where I am leaning right now, but not opposed to an M 7 or M8 either. I would like to stay around the 5-6,000 dollar range. I know the 07 M1000's are listed at 525 pounds.... My King in only listed at 499! Looks like I can pick up an M-8 or M-1000 for around the same price... What do you think? Being a big bore rider now, I am leaning toward the 1000... What do you recommend, and what minor mods do you recommend?

i think once you go rider forward you'd be happy with a M6 over your king kat! i know i've spanked plenty of kings with just an M7...

Once you have the power it is always hard to ride less. But in your case you are also changing chassis and i think while you are learning the new riding style you will get to the power you have. If i was in your sitution i would be looking at a 09 m8 or m1. If you go with a 08 both choices are good just not as good as the 09. for 07 m1 only m8 were ok just not great performance. The 07 m1 weights 600 lbs wet, stock with a 153 track.Hope this helps.

Like they said above, you are going to be happy with the upgrade regardless of what M series you get. If you can I would go with a 09, but I doubt you will find anything for $5000. If it was me and I couldn't get a 09 I would go with a 08 M1000. (With your size I would stay away from a M6 or M7) Good luck!

King Cat dry weight was listed at 520.

It's a little heavier than an M-1000, but the M chassis is worth about ten HP in itself. The first time you pull over a M sled you'll tip over. Maybe the first day , you'll feel silly, but you will appear to be a better rider after you get used to it. You probably won't find any M sled that will out climb the King for 5 G. The '09 M-8 is dialed in and works great without tinkering. I'd guess it will be hard to find an '09 for less than 8 G.

I have both a 04 1M/King cat and an 06 M7.

I loved my 900 and when I got the M7 I really didnt like it (no power)

well my 900 went down so I rode the M7 for 20 or so rides and when I changed the skis (mine were wore past the wearbars part of the not liking it) I was impressed,

I noticed I would ride just as hard and all my buddys would be WAY back, and I never though much about it....until I rode the 900 again, damn the 900 is almost uncontrolable compared to the M chasis and even with the lack of power they go so much better that I go to the same places and almost no difference. If one had to go it would be the 900 sad to say.

The M1000 nor the M8 are nearly as exciting to ride as the 900, they are so smooth and light compared and there is no "hit" of a the moster 900.

but you get a very linear acceleration that is WAY deceptive and I'm sure the M1000 would kill a 900 in technical climbing and boodocking, and even most likely hill climbing they just flat go ontop of the snow where the 900 wants to dig.

If I could afford it I'd go M1000 with a few tricks all white and black!

04 king cat mod to 07 m1000

THE M1000 IS A NATURAL CHOICE , IT WAS EASY TO RIDE AND HAD THE POWER I WAS USED TO, PLUS I COULD DRIVE TWICE AS FAST DOWN THE ROUGH TRAIL ON MY M1000, MOUNTAIN MAGIC MOTORSPORTS IN PRESTON , IDaho is advertising 08 m1000 used for $6200, also a guy from jackson hole was advertising his 07 m1000 for $5k

i agree w/ spomey. i have a 900, piped, 16 x 2.3 x 151...love it. it rips.

i also have a 08 doo xp mxz x that i slapped a 120 x 16 x 1.75 on..just for kicks.

Like you, i'm 250 w/ gear.

i love my 9, but am thinking about a new ride- and the M was the front runner for the upgrade. however, my skidoo is money. but, that's my short tracker. it's fun w/ that track to take it in the pow. you'd be amazed where it can go for such a shortie.

about two weeks ago, i took out an 09 m8 162 to test for the day.

i was so bummed out at the m8. my 9 would kill it. the m8 couldn't even climb with an 03 summit zx 151 800. the stock bars and seat are so low, it's like an old style sled- non rider forward. the lack of power was such a let down. i wanted nothing more than to brag about how great this sled was to my buddies.

i'm sad to say, unless cat comes out w/ something other than BNG, my next mountain sled will be a skidoo...and i'm a die hard cat guy. we also had a 09 154 800 doo in our group. nothing could touch it.

i will say that M can sidehill extremely well, but the lack of power was such a deal breaker.

I have ridden a mc 800 for 5 seasons, I recently got an 06 M7 162, night. and day for the better. You can do so much more on the M with not as much effort. I almost pulled off an up hill turn in 3 ft pluse powder(first time riding the M). My MC would have burried me to china as soon as the momentum stop. I do miss the hit of the 800/900 but ridiability (is that a word?) is so much more better with an M.

the M sure did have the manuverability that my 1M didn't, but you know one feature that is pretty key for heavier guys, is the 16" track.

i did that on my MC, big improvement for floatation. and i've ridden a few skidoos, also nice to have that.

i could feel the difference of the 15 vs 16. i know some dudes like the 15 to tip over easier, but for heavier dudes, that's not a problem. the 16 is a nice feature.

the PC track you could tell was a big improvement too. overall, i had a lot of things i really liked about the M, but the motor was the biggest let down.

maybe we'll see changes in hp for 2010.

I went from a King to a M8. It might not have the torque of the King but it knows how to get around. I put on SLP pipe and it rips. I am happy. But if you can get a well setup 1000 then Its a climber. The 8 is the boondocker. I was a happy climber at Baker today on my 8.

Thanks for all the info guys! With used M1000's at around 6,000+, and a new carry over 08 for 7800, it sounds like a new carry over would be the way to go. Sounds like the 09's are miles ahead of the 08's though... Trying to decide between the 'boondocker' m-8, and the 'climber' m1000. I think I am still leaning toward the m1000... or I take the money and build a garage and put a power claw on my King Cat... but thats no fun!

hopefully the 1000 has bang.

i will say, i watched an OVS M1000 162 race gas turbo simply run out of mountain.

i've never been so amazed. he accelerated up the mountain. i've literally never seen anything like that turbo in action.

he said w/ the boost, he was around 300-320hp.

so, maybe track speed is the key, or the lacking key to the underpowered m8.

possibly why there are rumors of a higher hp m8 for 2010?

900 to M1000

Really wasn't impressed first couple rides on the M10. Took a bit of getting used to the chassis difference. Geared it down and helped some with the bottom end. Tough not having the snap of the 900 but the more I ride it the better I like it. I think some secondary work will help with the bottom end too. All in all, wouldn't go back to the Mountain cat.

Oh sure, the M's are nice to ride, but will they take down as big of tree as the KK! 1000 if you want to climb high, 800 if you like to play and frolic in the pow.
