The motor started running funny on the way back from hunting.

It would start bogging for no reason them start running right.
A lot of black crud is being thrown around the pto side and it is not belt dust.
I sprayed some starting fluid at the pto shaft where the seal is.
The motor would almost die untill i gave it some throttle.
Compression is 120/125 for both sides hot.

Time to break it down and replace the pto shaft seal?
Or can i replace the seal without breaking the motor apart?

Transport 488 Fan cooled

It's actually a 488 fan engine, I've owned 3 over the years and still have the 1997 one. I use it at work and it has around 15,000 miles on it. These are the most dependable sleds ever made I have found, I have never had an engine problem, rebuilt the carbs once, and clutches a few times, rear suspension wore out, but the motor just keeps on ticking. It sounds like you have a seal gone, you might as well split the cases and change everthing if your going to keep it, this is expensive to do at a shop, alot of labour time, so if you can do it your self with a buddy would be the cheapest.
