As many of you know snowmobilers have come under attack via the proposed parking lot near Green Rock. Biodiversity Conservation Alliance is against the parking lot at Green Rock.

Well last year the comment period happened for the parking lot and we were caught with our pants down. The comment period happened in May and June and very few snowmobilers got word of it. So it was somewhere like 90% against the parking lot.

As part of a solution the Snowy Range Snowmobile Club has setup a email newsletter. Were asking that anyone that has an interest in riding the Snowy's please sign up its free. Why?

It will help us get the word out on issues important to out sport in the Snowy's.

And yes, we may bug you to Join the club, but you can't ignore the important content!

Thanks for your consideration!

just signed up, wyormk. Yes, alot of us would like to keep up on what is going on up there. The Snowies are a great place to visit and ride, and we want to keep it that way. Open for all to enjoy, unless you hug trees....

Thanks Everyone!!

Thanks to those that are signing up. The more people we have the bigger the voice!

Awesome! Really looked around for a way to stay up to date on land use/riding this area and did not find a whole lot.

I signed up today and sent an email to all my club members to join at least the mailing list for the newsletter. Plan on joining tonight when I have access to a printer

Signed up...

So what happened at the meeting last night?!

.

Well there was a vary large discussion on what our next steps are as far as a club and the parking lot.
Mainly we're still very early in our our planning stage. We have a lot of information that we still need to collect. Were want to in the very near future plan a meeting with the powers to be here in the Laramie area to get their feel on the situation.

Our view for right now is we need a parking lot at Green Rock, Location yet to be determined.

Also was the discussion on getting people and keeping them informed. Point of this thread!

So thanks to all, and pass on the word!

I was on the phone with a USFS person the other day. I believe, as he indicated as well, that the FS has no intention of restricting access to anyone, barring a Wilderness declaration.

The main reported motivation for the discussion is congestion and hazards with parking on the highway below the cattleguard. In my experience, this is not a serious issue. Additionally, this congestion is self limiting the number of sledders. More parking will allow and draw more sledders.

The number of non-sledding visitors is dwarfed by the number of sledders in the Greenrock area. These non-sledders find issue with pausing while someone gets parked or crosses the road. Their concern is selfish and greedy. Their right to the forest is no greater and no less than ours.

I, personally, concur with those I've spoken with at the USFS; leave well enough alone. No new parking. No new restrictions. Just keep the road clear and be courteous to all that use the forest.

.

I agree with a lot of what your saying. One thing other thing to note is currently were parking in WYDOT right-of-way. All it would take is for say an accident/fire on the Mountain and the need for say ambulance or fire trucks or other large scale vehicles. At time there are problems getting trucks and trailers in and out of that are. How would a wider emergency vehicle make it. I also know there has been at least one time this season that the plow trucks have refused to plow beyond half moon lot do to narrow road from parked rigs.

All it will take is WyDOT getting mad and well loose the parking we currently have.

Just a thought!

The following is not true. "Biodiversity Conservation Alliance is against the parking lot and anything that has to do with Snowmobiles in the Medicine Bow."

Biodiversity Conservation Alliance has offered alternative parking lot locations, and even recommended that the Forest Service develop a winter motorized recreation management plan just like they have for off-road vehicle enthusiasts, skiers, mountain bikers and hikers.

How can anyone accuse BCA of being "against the parking lot and anything that has to do with Snowmobiles in the Medicine Bow"?

Dialogue is impossible when one or both side lie about the other's position. This is why I have decided to not reveal "the rest of the story" about the Albany County Commissioner's meeting. It would not matter how detailed I was in telling the facts of the matter. Just like in the quoted statements above, my story would be misrepresented by WyoRMK or possibly someone else on this forum. It is sad when the truth is lost to hatred of the opposition. I will not waste my time or the truth on those who will lie or otherwise misrepresent the facts with half truths and twisted words.

It seems as if we honored by the presense of a member of Biodiversity Conservation Alliance.

Welcome to Snowest Forum :face-icon-small-hap

A recreation plan for hikers, skiers and mountain bikers?? - that does not exsist- where cant a hiker or skier go??? or maybe that is your point =make boundaries where hikers and skiers cant go

The snowmachiners do not need a winter plan- so take that back to your camp!

It is true that BCA has offers alternatives to the lot. Quote from thier site:
Relocating the snowmobile parking lot south to Highway 230 or near Albany makes more sense for the tourism industry in that both non-motorized and motorized recreationist would enjoy higher quality experiences.

How many of you want to ride out of 230??? Albany does get its use, but it is not a viable alternative as it would add 15-30 miles or riding to each days ride. am I correct?

Please take a minute to read read the statement on BCA site: http://www.voiceforthewild.org/general/alerts/a21January2010.html It does not take long to get the point. They don't want us up there!

As for the "Rest of the Story" how can one come to a conclusion without knowing all the facts?

My question with the whole meeting as I was out of town that day and had not gotten any word that it was happening is:

Why was it announced in the local paper the same morning as the meeting? Seems as though someone does not want the other side to participate!

OK,

So I should add more info from the meeting. This is an article from the Laramie Boomerang. It contains some of the points from the meeting that happened on the 26th here in Laramie. http://www.laramieboomerang.com/articles/2010/01/27/news/doc4b5fde6d1b501852289367.txt

I will this quote: "Short said Biodiversity is not trying to keep snowmobilers from recreating in the Snowy Range, but wants to open up more of the forest to skiers, hikers and snowshoers."

So I guess i will have to retract my first statement. Their just against the parking lot!

No sense in turning this thread into bashing the BCA for heavens sake. Lets focus on strengthing our own voices. The BCA speaks for theirselves. I would say that with the "winds" blowing the way they are, that the SRSC would best serve their membership and sport by focusing positively on this issue. and Motomojohead, if you quack like a duck and walk like a duck..... I'm not going there. Join the email list guys, if you don't do anything else.

You absolutely correct Albany Mountain!

Really this email list has nothing to do with BCA. It is more about being organized as a group with an mechanism to distribute important news from the Snowy Range.
