Yamaha Sno Sport Mod

Got the first Sno Sport modded - 108" x 11.5" x 1.25" lug - plus phazer fairing.

Not too difficult ... new drivers (Yamaha Bravo 2.52" square shaft) + track (AD BOIVIN) + rails from a Yamaha Ovation / Bravo (108") cut down to fit, larger rear wheels.

Finally ran it around the parking lot today .... should be able to go places now ... waiting on new USI skis to get rid of the steel anchors.

Morning, Do you have any more pics? I have 2 of these rigs and want to make a cool looking Sno Sport to hang on the wall at the lodge. Tried to get your pics to enlarge, but no luck. Thanks, Mark

Couch, thanks man, the photos are great that you sent. NIce clen looking job. You will probably be getting quite a few inquiries as I know the tracks for these are non-exsistant and there are people looking for other alternatives. Thanks for the ideas as to what I can do.

I'll fix the pics shortly ... did it from the Imac in flickr but didn't have the setting right ...

still have few things to do ...
have to lengthen the tunnel / track shroud and cut down the front axel.

Got a set of USI flat line skis but didn't realize that they were as short and narrow and likely will not offer enough floatation - so now I need to come up with another set to replace the steel skis ... any suggestions appreciated - looking at the late model AC mini skis.

In the meantime, I guess I'll have a set of Flat Line skis to return / trade.

I have second sport for parts that I might mod as well - need a few pieces (air shroud, electric start) and have a few to trade including an OEM track that is in usable condition, OEM rails and wheels in good condition.

i put the z120 skis on my scoot...that was several years ago..scoots gone now..forget what i exactly did but wasn;t major...and four years ago Yamaha still had tracks..

Couch, Put that track on fleabay or send it to Haydays. It will bring $500 to $1000 if it is in good shape. The Sno-Scoot tracks are still available but new Sno-Sport tracks are very hard to come by. Everytime I see one they want major bucks and are sold quickly. I too would like to know what to use for skis, I have seen people with different ones on but have never looked to see what they were.

That is pretty awesome. I just bought a mint sno sport for my kids to run around with the sno scoot we've had for a couple years. Would love to do a deeper lug track like you did. What year bravo/ovation did you use parts from

Any year ovation should do / short track bravo rails would probably work as well - they are a little bit different than the ovation rails. The older style enticer / excell rails are likely close as well.

The hardest part was porting the track ... its pretty tough to cut ... I made a jig to cut the four corner holes, rough cut with a jig saw, then trimmed with a router with a straight faced bit. Rest of it was relatively easy .... I still have to narrow in the two axels and then its done (repainting it now).

Can you post a pic of the porting you did on the track. The pitch of the stock snosport track is different than the ovation track, is that right? Also are all the older 1980's ovation/bravo tracks only 11.5" wide?

Had to change out the drivers to a pair of 2.52" pitch which is close enough to run the AD Boivin track (2.592" pitch) ... the tolerances are enough to keep it from riding up on the drive cogs. The drivers are the replacement ones for the older short track bravo's which let you run a 2.52" track.

I'll post more pictures of the mod in a bit ... have the sled apart again to paint and clean up the rails.

The track is from AD Bovin for the explorer bike conversion (AD Bovin manufactured SnoHawk). I should have it all back together this evening and will post more pics (just waiting on seat recovering) including the plastic skis.

I have the other sport (parts sled) running and will do the conversion on it if the first one works as well as it should ... anyone with a handle on some sport parts? Need / want some of the shroud plastics, original fuel pump, and electric start .... last owner(s) of the parts sled gave it a bit of a hard going over.

Mod sport

Any news on the mod Sport? I have 2 sports and would love to Mod one of them.
Pictures would be great! Any chance you could do a parts list of parts you used and the mods required to each?

Craig

A few new pics with the new colours ... needs a few "girly" stickers for the kids. Have new belt ordered and a few parts for the other sport (got it running too).
parts required for mod ...
track ... AD Boivin Explorer 108" x 11.5" x 1.25",
drivers ...2.52" 7 tooth for square shaft (Bravo replacement),
rails, wheels & axels .... ovation / enticer / tundra / citation should all do the trick - fron edge trimmed to fit / clear drivers,
track clips,
kimpex skis, loops & carbides

everything else is stock ... just need to do a bit of welding - bracket on the swing arm to give required clearance, cross pipe between the rails, riser for the ski brackets. I also molded a new tunnel out of fibreglass so I could cut it and stretch it (aluminum would work well too if available.

Ran fine on the pavement ... waiting for snow for a real test.

sno sport track mod

Can you still get a 108 x 11.5 x 1.25 "Explorer" track from AD Boivin? If so, does the track come with windows cut into it, or did you have to cut them in yourself? If so, what clips did you use?

Finally, have you had some snow to run it in yet? If so, how did it perform? Does the sport make enough power with the longer track to push through a bit of deeper snow/powder?

Where I live, the sports are trail legal and for the most part you don't have to stop every 5 minutes to help your kids getting it moving again because it has the power to get through a bit of deep snow. I don't want to do this if the end result is sled that can only run on hardpack ... then all you've got is a bigger 120.

Sorry to be such a pest, but this may be the only way to get the sport back into action when my track (which is almost completely shot) goes to hell.

Still no snow here yet!!!! Sucks to say the least - looking at above freezing and drizzle for the next week so I can't say for sure how much better the mod is compared to stock.

I have a 2nd sport up and running so that when the snow comes I can compare them head to head (both now have larger plastic skis which will make a big difference compared to the stock skis). Once the white stuff arrives (if ever) I'll shoot a bit of video for comparison.

Far as I know you can still get the AD Bovin Track (its from the Explorer bike kit) - still needs to be opened up and clipped. If the mod works as good as I expect, I might use a Firecat (120" x 13.5" x 1.25") on the second one since they are available used at a decent $ and are already opened & clipped.

sno sport mod

After seeing your mod, I started looking at all the companies making snow bike kits and stumbled on a track set-up from Timbersled. The link is to their accessories page, but has some decent photos of the track that can be opened and enlarged by clicking on them (couldn't figure out how to upload them here). Anyway, the track is a 121 x 12.25 x 1.75 lugs. The set-up looks like something that just might fit under a snosport with a bit of mod work. Too bad they want $5,000 for it.

I also called AD Boivin and they said they had some used ATV Traxion plus tracks (90 x 12, with 2.52 pitch). I looked for some images of this track online but didn't find much. The ones I did find looked like the lugs run all the way accross the track, and there are no windows, so you'd have to port the track and clip it. But it would be pretty close the snosport's OEM length, so you could use your existing rails. AD Boivin said they had 2 tracks at $250 ea.

I will definitely be looking for future posts, Couch. Can't wait for the videos and your report.
