XP: Cutting the fat

Before I removed any foam, the panel vent right above my muffler started to melt and deform a little.

I removed the foam on the muffler side, and put some thin shiny reflective tape on the panel where the foam was. No problem so far.

I see a ton of guys talking about cutting weight off their sleds. There is one thing that never gets talked about. How about shedding weight off of the riders....
It is the cheapest way to gain ride ability, with out losing reliability.

Go on a diet I bet you could lose 15lbs there isn't one of us that is under weight.

dieting won't help. The truth is a big guy on a light sled has the advantage in almost all situations except maybe a straight shot up a steep and deep because he has more weight to use to control the sled. If he knows how to use it. Lose the foam and the muff and learn to ride it the way it is.

No offense, but you are grossly incorrect with this statement.

Its been proven time after time after time, "Lightweight is what wins in the Steep & Deep" :D .... and that includes the weight of the rider.;)

From Idaho Slim's threads:

Diet:
HPS Can - 11.5
Eliminate all plastic/Foam - 1
3 to 2 BWK & Shaft - 2.0
Clutch guard -1.5
Pipe Insulation - 3.0
Sway Bar & Links - 1.5
Hiper fax /loose Bogies - 6.0
Swap to Slydog Ski's - 1.5
Suspenion - 17.0
Total - 45

I'm having a acronym problem, what's "3 to 2 BWK & Shaft - 2.0". Must be 3 back wheels to 2 back wheels and shaft?

Oh, and I'm going to loose weight also. I'm 6'4" and only weight 100 pounds, but I think I can loose another 15 pounds. :)

Wade, yes it means going to 2 rear wheels from the stock 3. I recommend the single shaft from "Ice Age" manufacturing in Canada. A very simple shaft, $55, that fits the stock 8 inch wheels from BRP. You can just use 3 of the stock wheels, or add some bling if you prefer. I have them on all 3 of our sleds.

I removed all the decal's, had the paint sandblasted off the coil springs and cut the throttle flipper in half.... good for 14.8 OZ of weight lose.

Slim, im heading to the dunes today with a supercharged Rhino. all the rain should have the sand setup pefect.

Wade I hear you on the noise issue, I dont like our trails (here in MN) being closed or land I ride out west being closed, but there are aftermarket companies that do a good job with aftermarket mufflers that are not much louder than stock but still save weight, so dont write that off completely yet.Slp comes to mind, and even the mbrp trail cans are decent.

Nate posted about something at this company, and I just noticed that they have a suspension kit for the XP.

NexTech Suspension

I don't see what your buying other than a shock. And, why didn't they replace the coilover shock, and save some more weight? Anyone have experience with this company's XP suspension?

Thanks Slim and Wade, got an e-mail back from him already. Looks like a VERY nice piece, and the price is right (60)

Looking for more free weight to take off.

On the primary clutch, there's a drive ring. I assume it's for electric start. Can it be removed, and would the clutch need to be rebalanced? Is there anymore weight that can be removed for the starter, that I'm not going to use?

I bought a HPS can. Nicely built. Guess we'll see how it sounds.

HPS can 4 pounds 7 ounces.
Stock can 15 pounds 6 ounces.

I bought an XP X = 50lbs savings
Excercise and diet next 2 months = 15lbs savings and a ton more energy
Total savings = 65lbs

If BRP could build a lighter than air sled people would still ask how to save weight. Better way to save weight is to buy a used 08 and change everything...Fox, timbersled, Dynoprot w HPS, BB, Boss. You would come back at 175hp, sub 400lbs = 2.28lbs/hp for around $12,500ish. But I digress....sorry.

Had mine off for 500kms and then put back on as I thought I noticed the loss of flywheel effect when climbing and hitting the rough stuff seemed to slow down quicker. Now I think it was gearing and will try taking off again. It did seem to rev faster without the ring gear. It also idles slightly smoother with the gear on. This could save bearings?
