XP Chain Tensioner

Just got my sled back from dealer for driveshaft recall, checking everything over to make sure it's OK, tried to check chain tension and could not adjust by hand, so pull it apart and red loctite has been used on tensioning bolt. Is there any reason for this? Doesn't make sense to me as you should be able to adjust chain tension by hand or am I wrong?

chain tension is very tight on 08-09 xp's--not fingertight any more--loctite seale threads:D

The loctite should have been removed and a bonded rubber/metal sealing washer installed in it's place between the nut and chain case.

my xp service manual says to tighten the chain tension adjuster bolt as tight as you can by hand and then tighten the lock nut to hold it in place.
I just use what the sled came with stock and have not had any problems. pretty sure their wasn't any red loctite on mine new from the dealer. If the dealer has worked on it before maybee they or some one else put red loctite on it to prevent it from coming loose???

our 08's all had the seal washer--loctite keeps the oil from followig the threads out--our dealer told us to put loctite on when we did any work in the chain case:confused:

I dont understand the red loctite, I check my chain tension before every ride. Loctite wont do much good IMO, unless you like cleaning the threads of daily lol

Per oem manual

What is the proper method to adjust/check chain tension? operators guide does not describe

Page 397:
DRIVE CHAIN ADJUSTMENT
Remove muffler. Unscrew the lock nut on tensioner adjustment screw. Push back washer with rubber surface. Tighten tensioner adjustment screw BY HAND
NOTE: turn adjustment screw until resistance is strong enough that it cannot be turned by hand.
Hold tensioner adjustment screw and tighten lock nut to 36 N*m (27 lbf*ft).

:D

There has been an update for all 08 sleds. Like stated before there is a sealer washer that needs to be put in place under the nut. Before this there was nothing there to keep the oil in the case. The dealers had a lame fix of loctite or any sealing compound. The correct method of chain tension is still hand tight but you cant acheive that with the loctite on the threads. Thats why they have comeout with this new washer tp prevent oil leaking and to maintain tension by hand. Its a free part from BRP. You can find the part number on BRP web site..
