XP – My thoughts after 1000 miles

XP – My thoughts after 1000 miles

attachment.php

On this forum you hear everything from this sleds rocks to what a POS about the XP. After having put over a 1000 miles on it I would have to agree would both points of view.

I will be making some comparisons to my 04 800 151 with 13000 KM and my07 800 151 with 6000 KM

First off what I like about my XP 154. I love the power and the light weight. The handle bars are the right height for me when standing which is pretty much all the time. It is very easy to throw around and floats way better than my 04 or 07. The track doesn’t trench like the 07 does. I love riding this sled in the trees. It turns so sharp and side hills effortlessly. I find the 04 a bit on the heavy side the 07 pretty good but the XP is way better at turning and throwing around. Carving in the deep powder is so much fun with this thing. When going down hill it very easy to crank it over and point it up hill again. Because it floats so well what I call the stuck factor has gone way down. I find myself riding in tighter trees and deeper stuff without worrying about getting stuck and the few times I do get stuck it so much easier to get going again. Most the time when I realize I not going to make it just by jumping off the sled while giving it a push and shot of gas it pops right back on top and I am ready to go again. Those yami boys that says all sleds are heavy when stuck are wrong about the XP, the tail is easy to lift (I am 220 6’1”) and by pulling it back a couple of feet and pulling it on it side and packing under the track I can usually get going again. I am breaking trail pretty much once or twice a week with all the snow we have been getting and I find it so much better than my other sleds with having to take way less runs at a hill and being able to crank it around at the last second a lot easier. Turning around on the trail is way easier too. I was up Lone Goat today after a big dump with my buddy who has a pretty modded out RT 162 and my XP which is totally stock was out climbing it. Last year he could beat me on my 07. I am still waiting for my dealer to get some 19 tooth gears in and the only thing that has been done to my sled is some weight in the clutch. I am getting decent track speed at 7000ft in the deep stuff at around 46MPH. Around here we usually have to ride 20KM on the logging roads to get to the good stuff and I find it pretty stable on the washboard that we are known for. At the end of the day if there is a smooth stretch I find myself actually seating on the seat and stretching my legs out in those deep foot wells. This is definitely the funnest sled I have ridden.

But it not all good news. I can’t believe after the disasters with clutches last year that BRP can bring out something again with the same problem, I went through about 8 belts on my 07 last year and have gone through 3 on the XP so far this year, As I said above I am still waiting for the dealer to get some gears in which I hope will solve this issue. I kept my 07 to use as a backup if there were going to be problems with the XP but the engine blew end of November and it is still waiting for parts, 6 f ing weeks now ! The dealer is telling me they are updating the wrist needle pin to caged one and there aren’t any and no short blocks do to this either. Who and where does BRP do there testing? Probably half the guys on this forum could do a better job. Do these guys just ride up the trail and smoke a big fatty and tell BRP that there are no issues? Like most others XP riders my intake clogs in the deep stuff, belts are blowing, the track seems to be showing lots of thread, I think my rear shock needs to be charged. At least my shaft hasn’t broke or my crank seized yet. Finally got my grips replaced last week. One thing I haven’t read on here is that my pull cord is shredding right at the handle which I just fixed temporally by pulling a couple of inches out and tying another knot. So would I buy one again? If BRP can fix these issues I sure would.

Excellent write up

I find the same things, unfortunately, my motor seized, so i really need reassuring the next time I buy a 800 from doo, which might be never.........

Love the sled tho and what it does on the snow, Good luck!

We just got back from Fernie and my buddy was on his first ride on the new XP 163. He had the same issues. 2 belts in a few hundred kms, Those clutches get SMOKING hot. He loved the handling of the sled and it does work VERY well in the trees. I rode it and found it hard to lean over. It didnt come over as easy as my Yamaha but I did not ride it much. Must just take a while to get used to it. He also has a really bad bog around 5500 rpm that he couldnt get rid of. The only way he could ride it on the trail was with the choke 1/2 on.

Its really too bad ! The XP is a good sled out of the box, but with all the QC issues it really puts a damper on owning the sled sometimes. We were out riding in Revy yesterday and my buddies XP blew a brand new belt in 30km. Its pretty bad when you can't make a pull in the really deep stuff because your worried about taking out your belt. We tried the torque stop mod and will see if that helps but i seriously doubt it. This new belt is supposed to be better but i really can't see it making a big difference other than the fact it is harder than the 166. These are the mods to date:

machined secondary
added pin weight
regear
torque stop mod
venting

Nothing has helped so far. The clutches get way to hot. This is all deep snow riding in Revy. I have not found one XP rider in the Revy area that i have talked to that has not had these issues. I talked to the Golden dealer and they are still seeing it as well.

Does anyone know anyone running the racer engine mounts ?

Well, thanks to imput from you I had my secondary machined, more pin weight and regeared...@ Motor Tec in Golden...the issue I am facing now is back shifting in the deep...with the fixes the bottom end grunt is increadable!! And I purposely used a beat up 166 belt (pre fixes) all w/e in deep Revy snow..and no issues...
but climbing up a steep incline with all the snow the engine would pull and pull..but it needed to down shift to keep pulling...what would happen, if i did the pull on fresh tracks..the machine struggled..if i did the same pull but right when I would have pulled around, if i ran accross a previous track..the clutch would down shift and off to the races I would go...so not sure if the secondary Helic needs changing or what...any suggestions??

PS hand warmed getting fixed this week...thank God...man it will be nice to have warm hand again!!

Good review, seems fair to me.

I have had more then my share of problems, but still like the chassis enough to try and work through them. My handwarmers went out, engine burned down one piston, fried my first belt at 213 miles, then pulled the next one off the sled to see that at 258 miles it was pulling cords out. Dealer has been great, but he is probably getting tired of seeing me.

I made a few clutch changes and put on the new 377 belt, hope to put on 150 or so miles this weekend and test it out. If this does not work I will be trying one of the clutch kits hitting the market.

The dealer here in Squamish has tried race engine mounts, UHMW plastic, UHMV plastic, hockey pucks, and a few other things to replace the stock motor mounts... unfortunately, they really didn't help.

My buddy hasnt quite hit 1000km, and he's gone through 8 or 9 belts, in the group I ride with, there are 4 new XP's, I lost count after 25 belts between the 4 of them.

Have Fun

Have you checked the alignment now that xyz measurements are available? The Gates 38X4320 is what I'm running now. I only pulled cords on one 166 belt when my track stuck full of snow and I smashed the throttle. About 650 km's now. Doing Golden or Fernie this weekend.

my local dealer has an alignment tool that was made special for the xp, by a good friend of his. with that said. one of the motor mounts was slotted to allow the motor to be moved to align the clutches. That hasn't helped belt life any. However i have always been hard on belts. lots of sidehilling.

300 plus miles on Ultimax belt, 19 tooth gear, 16 grams pin weight in clutch, 2.5 in SLP vent, other than hand warmers and soft rear suspension no issues.

I am at a loss

Don't know why all the belt issues, after our break-in/adjustments here's our talley: ALL on the stock original 166 belt.............

My 154 = 532 miles
Jo's 146 = 446 miles
Buds 154 = 656 miles
Tech A's 154 = 345 miles

HARD miles in this years deep snow, can pin it at any hill and hold er.

Hope yours work out.

The Alberta rep is saying that there are huge quality issues and inconsistancies with the 166 belt. that is why some last a long time and some go at 20 miles.

I will be running the new belt this weekend. will be interesting to see if it lasts longer.

my friend has one he absolutely loves the power but has had a few belts grenade on him
his biggest complaint is he says that when he slows down it feels like the track is rubbing and sending a shudder through the machine very annoying and a little un nerving untill he finds out what it is
he has had it at the dealer for this but they cant find or I'm not sure if they have acknowledged the problem
But he does love it
