XLT Won't start with clutch on

I searched couldn't find anything hope some one can help 1996 XLT 600 starts and runs good with no clutch soon as I put the clutch on it wont even start is this a bad clutch or is it the motor I tried two clutch's on was bad for sure. I thought the other one was good but maybe not.

try a compression test maby? might not have enough to pull any load? could be time for a new top end

Are you putting the belt on too? Or just bolting the clutch on and leaving the belt off?

mine had the same problem couldent spin it fast enough with the clutch and belt on
a new set of rings fixed it for the season then it got a top end job in the spring.
