XLT crank bearings - is pin required?

Reviving a 600 xlt. Both PTO bearings are pretty rough.
I have perfectly spec'd replacement bearings here in hand however they do not have the pin in the race. Is this pin actually required? Why?
I gave a go at drilling to put pins in but the drill bit will not even scratch it.

I do not recall any of my other sled, PWC, or bike engines (500 thru 1050cc) as having these bearing outer race pins. I am thinking to forgo the pins.

Thoughts?

Thank you.

There is one bearing with an external snap ring on it. That bearing locates the crank. The pins mentioned do nothing, other than perhaps prevent the outer race turning in the case if/when the bearing piles up.
