Winter Park. Is there riding?

H

Heypal

Well-known member
Hello,

Is there any riding areas near the Winter Park area? I have access to a condo there and was wondering about riding.

Thanks,
Pal

Ya there is some good riding up around winter park its a small area but I had fun up there when I lived there 4 yrs ago.. little boondocking and nice climbs around there

There is Jones Pass and Corona Pass that I know of. PM TEC on the forums here and ask him. He's the one guy I know that knows that area hands down.

Jones isn't in winter park, it's on the other side of the pass. It also got cut to about 1/4 of what it used to be as of about a month ago, and then you add in the cat op... and my backyard spot is no longer worth even going to.

But hey, thanks for mentioning it in EVERY single post... really appreciate that. Even when it's not even in the same damn county as where people are asking about.

Heypal... I'll give you PJ's address, so you can go to his house & just follow him to wherever he rides. That's the best spot.

Attitude

Backcountryislife, whats up with the attitude? If you dont feel like helping other people out then don't, but its not like Jones pass & Corona Pass are some secret riding areas. Some people like myself are new to the riding areas in CO and I would be more than happy to let people know where to ride in WY so i would expect the same respect in CO.

Had I replied to your post somehow? Maybe I'm missing something here.

Jones is a VERY small area, that was taken over by a POS snowcat Company, and just this year, we lost the majority of our terrain, so it's just plain not a place that is even WORTH mentioning anymore... it's become a turd of an area.

I'm ALWAYS happy to show new people around... I do it all the time, but with what has happened recently to Jones, it's just not an area that needs to be mentioned in every damn post, even when it's not in the area where the OP is asking about. As someone who LIVES in grand county... I find it funny that PJ doesn't know ANY other areas that are near WP... but feels the need to mention somewhere that's in a whole different county.

Corona, Church Park, Meadow Creek, Grand Lake, and there's many others as well.

If you want to find some great spots in ANY area around there (or hell, even at Jones...), shoot me or Tec a PM, I'm sure that we'd both be happy to show a noob around!! Showing someone around isn't the issue, not at all.

There are some real idiots on this forum and obviously new to Colorado. Go back to the flatlands where you all came from and leave my riding areas alone. Bitches. Most of the people you talk to around here have just moved here in the last 10 years. And think they know it all. The more ppl that ride an area mean the quicker it will be regulated and shut down or limited. Thats how it works. So what should we do? Im getting drunk.

Your riding areas? Since you live in Grand Lake it makes it yours? Haha. Good one. I do agree that the more crowded they get, the more likely it is to get shut down, but snowest or not, it's gonna happen. I'm a native and understand what you mean but most people are just looking to have a good time like everyone else man. Lighten up.

More and more people are showing up and snowmobiling there...ever since Kaleb promoted it with great pics and organized rides. :face-icon-small-sho

Isn't it the closest place to ride coming from Denver? Only like 40 minutes from downtown.:face-icon-small-hap

Yeah, 35 minutes if you don't lift through Empire;).

What closed, though? I kinda gave up on the place a couple of years ago, beyond early season clutching and whatnot. Was up last weekend, absolute circus - not so much sledders, just a handful of the usual sled-ski suspects, but the foot/car traffic was ridiculous.

Unloaded, got going. Maybe 300' from the end of the parking lot, came across a Subaru wagon off in the ditch. Subaru wagon on allseasons (barely, more of a summer tire). Gave him a push. Hey, he did have a floormat for extra grip, he was prepared! Proceeded on; the Subaru had gotten almost to the Butler fork, judging by the ping-pong ruts off each side of the road (and very nice impressions of the Subaru pressed into the snow). Continued further, at the last right turn before the straight shot to the upper lot, came across a Jeep, also in the ditch. Russian guy and his girlfriend. "I got distracted, she is too beautiful."

Ok, he was right about that. Guided him out - he was not really stuck, he was just trying to drive out of the ditch RIGHT NOW with the wheels at full lock and PS pump trying to explode.

Continued up, did some riding, not enough snow, but there's a blown-in section that gave me what I wanted - a dragstrip to mess with clutches - headed back down. Came across a group of hikers with skis - I suspect the occupants of the Subaru - just past the first left switchback above the upper lot. Did not have the heart to tell them there was not enough snow, they did not want a ride. Poor guy bringing up the rear was hiking in ski boots. Ugh.

Jones has it's place, for me - early season testing, quick midweek before work rides, but beyond that....ehhh. Windblown up high, sugar snow down low, and if NOT windblown up high, the place is a deathtrap. I'm just curious as to what got closed; I pay fairly close attention to that stuff, but missed JP closures.

I did it just to piss you off. :kev:

Now, back to reality. I made mention because a question was asked, them I made reference to a local who knows the area. And last I checked, Grandlake is not closer to WP than Jones. I was just offering some info, no need to cry.

BTW, did you get the bleeding to stop??

Asking people to talk about an area online is not the same as asking someone if they'll show you an area one on one. The former... you can ask for & hope for, but the latter, I rarely find you'll ever be denied. (not by me anyhow)

As to the organized "rides"... I do an avy practice day every year, hoping to help people out... sorry about that, I'll avoid that kind of thing in the future.:face-icon-small-dis

Even though jones is more rocky than other places it's usually a place where we can get enough snow to be able to bury beacons early in the season... so I did them there. I also tend to do it early enough that people who come there are there for JUST that, because there's nowhere decent to ride at that point yet.

This year I'm Planning to do it at Corona, I've got a bunch of people that have asked me about it, and I guess we'll do it again because there are people that need practice & if that's what it takes... then we'll keep doing it.
