will sled fit in bed of a dakota?

I carry my 01' 800 Artic Cat in my Dakota sometimes. I have the standard bed and it doesn't even stick out as far as some people I've seen driving around.

I hauled my 01 800 RMK w/151 track in my extended cab dakota. It sticks out the back a foot or so, but 90% of the weight is on the truck. I never had a problem

A guy I rode with last weekend carries his 07 RMK 600 144 in the back of his little Toyota pickup (pre-Tacoma). Since one ski sits up on a wheel well, he balances the back of it with a 2' long 4x4, then straps it in good. Seems to work okay. I need to ask him what kind of gas mileage he gets carrying the sled. Picking up one of those could be cheaper than using my Dodge diesel dually...

is the bed to short to put track up on tailgate.. thats what i usually did and didnt have to strap down

Friend tossed my 800 MC 144 in the back of his 98 Dakota. Just make sure you lift the back of the sled, closed the gate and set it on the tailgate. Then strap the front end to keep it from pivoting out. Mine stuck out far enough we put a red flag on the back as hazard warning just to make sure we didn't get pulled over for not having one.

For riding in California, trailer towing is avoided by those who can. CA has a ridiculous 55 mph law for trailer towing, and if it's snowing at all or there's any snow on the road, you have to chain up. But if you're just carrying your sled in the back of your truck, none of that applies.

That's why a lot of people are putting flatbeds on their trucks instead, since that way you can carry two sleds pretty easily, and without being as top-heavy as with a sled deck.

As far as sticking out goes, the law I saw is that if you stick out 4' or more, you need a red flag.

A few weeks back I seen a Toyota or a Nissan truck with a sled in the back. The tail gate was total screwed. Bent in the middle and actually split down the middle too. Maybe there was more to the story, never talk to the guy. I know I'm not a big fan if putting a sled in the back of a truck with out a deck or some kind of other rigging to protect the tail gate and box. It just too easy to do damage.

Hauled my sled all last winter in my dodge 1500 shortbox, and will this year in my dodge 3500 shortbox, I don't put anything on the tailgate, because they can handle the weight just fine, my only worries are rock ships on it. If anything just take off the tailgate, shutting the tailgate will cause more stress to the tailgate then leaving it down. There might be 200 lbs on the tailgate at the VERY max, I put more standing on it...
