Will an IPOD cause avy beacon frequency interference?????

Wow Ive never heard that before... Scary cause cause i see allot of people wearing them. I wonder what else this applies too? Cell phones? Radio's? Other mp3's?

Laird , I think from reading the report that just having a cell phone on or a 2 way radio turned on with you is ok , but if a call is being made or received is when they will start to give RFI .
I see lots of people riding with IPods as well and it really bothers me but I guess I will just hope that I never have to look for one of them to see how much the interference really messes the search up . It's one of those deals where seconds count and if a tragic loss can be avoided by simply leaving the IPod at home then I'm all for it.

I've heard that cell phones or GPS could interfere also...but that talk was a while back and I've not heard much of that talk the last couple years.

The IPOD stuff is new.

I'd like to see more research and facts about this to either refute or back this up.

Yes, this is true, and if you take a look at your beacon manual.....there will be a warning in it about other electronics. 2 way radios are another.

You can also take out your beacon, and play with these items. I have 3 different models/brands of beacons, and with every one, I am able to create and hear interference (Ortovox F1, DTS Tracker, Mammut Barryvox Pulse).

The IPOD stuff.......I haven't tried that, but I guess that is something I will be doing. I don't ride with one, so never put my beacons through the test for that.

I wear skullcandy ear buds and they work out really good.... haven’t had any trouble with them.....

my cell phone is turned off when i ride. I don't want to take the chance of interferance with the beacon if i get buried. I have also left the 2 way radio off until i need to use it. Then turn it off after it has been used. Why take the chance. I believe electronics are electronics and there would be no difference between ipod, cell or 2 way. But i like to make things simple.

RFI from wireless devices

Wow Ive never heard that before... Scary cause cause i see allot of people wearing them. I wonder what else this applies too? Cell phones? Radio's? Other mp3's?

Yes, it is possible that a wireless device such as a cell phone, FRS radio or any other gadget that is capable of transmitting RF could interfer with a beacon signal. Depending on the radio frequency used by the various devices and the beacon, there can be overlap causing a beacon signal to be "covered up" by a stronger signal or distorted causing confusion as it it's location.

The odds that it actually will happen may not be great but it is a very real possiblity so proceed with caution!

Be safe..

Cool to listen to tunes while dancin the pow but the sound of my sled is music to my ears anyway!!!

I feel the same way! Last year I started wearing ear plugs on occasion. I am around so much loud equipment the rest of the year, I need to keep my hearing in tact as much as possible. I typically wear my Ipod when running the skidloader and they act just like ear plugs. Other than they slide out occasionally. I thought maybe they could double as earplug and listen to some tunes too.

I definetely wont be do that unless we are dockin' for the day.

I wear earplugs too.
I put in ear buds AND ear muffs when weed eating. THAT is awesome. You ALMOST can't hear the weed eater. It's unreal. Tunes don't have to be very loud on that deal. LOL

I started putting in ear buds when I ride this year too.
I can hear the sled pretty well AND can listen to good tunes when I ride. I get a good mixture of tunes and sled sounds.

Twister hears Megadeath in his head when he rides(that scares me)... :face-icon-small-sho so he has the best of both worlds... :face-icon-small-hap

I know for certain that a cell phone will cause beacon interference. Not sure on a iPod, but I think beacons are very sensitive. I can't even get my beacon to work in the house due to electrical interference. I'd lean towards being safe over sorry and not use the iPod.

I listen to megadeth when I ride!

I have helmet speakers in my tobe helmet but really have never used them much. I found it was just a pain in the butt anyway... Cool to listen to tunes while dancin the pow but the sound of my sled is music to my ears anyway!!!

I remember hearing in Mike Duffys class that cell phones that are turned on can interfere....not sure on radios, but a VERY good question.

So having your radio on during a search can cause interference?
