My wife was diagnosed with MS yesterday. I was just wondering if anyone out here has MS or has a family member with it. I guess I would just like to know what we can expect. Any info or personal stories would be appreciated. Feel free to PM me if you are more comfortable with that.

Thank you.

O' man that stinks..., I know of a guy in his late 40's that was diaganosed with MS..., sold his farm and move to Texas..., I guess he seemed to do better in the warm weather..., the couple times I saw him before he moved he was having balancing/equilibrium problems. Best of luck!

I am so sorry to hear of this.....:( I have a very good friend his wife lived a long life with MS. I am sure they have many new drugs helping with MS. If you would like more info on his experiences send me a pm. Take care!!

sorry to hear!!!!! there are different forms of MS really. some can and will strike very fast, others take a long time to materialize and will only have minor complications for many years!

My old neighbor moved from NJ when I was a kid (70's) She was diagnosed in the early 80's with MS. She was confined to a wheelchair within 10yrs. Great lady though, and her husband who is an avid outdoorsman became a better man because of it. She has her bad days, but I think overall their family is very close due to her MS. I saw them recently just after they buried their daughter who died after missing an insulin shot (diabetic) and when she took her regular dose it killed her. She left 2 children. You think that they were just a couple full of tragedy but you talk to them and they are such a strong couple and will do just fine raising their grandchildren without their mother. To think that they can pull that off with their age and the MS, one would think would be crazy. But not to them. Attitude is key and keep your chin high.

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis. The only doctor I would use, he retired a couple of years ago at the age of 78, has a clinic in Bellevue. He was a physician/surgeon who moved to naturopathic medicine. His wife had MS and he was able to keep her living a normal life with naturopathic medicine. He also co-founded the Northwest Acadamy of Preventive Medicine with Dr. Jonathan Wright who now operates the Tahoma clinic. There is a lot of information at their sites and if you wish I can give you my access No. to the site for research. If you contact them they could probably steer you to a doctor closer to you, if so pm me. You might also want to go to the global site they all work with and join to get more information than you could ever use. Swampy:heart:

MS is a funky one.... My wife was diagnosed almost 6 yrs ago.... There are 4 different forms (levels) of it.... Remitting/relapsed, Primary-progressive, Seconday-progressive, and Progressive-relapsing.

What happened with your wife that caught it? Have you been to a Nuerologist?

With my wife, she has what they refer to remitting/relapse... She has had 2 exacerbations since being diagnosed, and fully recovered from both.

Everyone will have different experiences and different levels of exacerbations.

In our research, the drugs (beta-interferons) to treat the disease are nasty stuff.... Our Nuerologist told us they do not have enough data to prove if they work or not.... He also said the only time he would recommend it, is if nothing else is working....

What we found is stress is the number one ticker to trigger an exacerbation... Keeping her stress to a minimum has proved to help IMHO....

You can PM me with any questions, or if you want to talk further...

Here is a good link with lots of info... You will find google to be ur best friend;)

One other note, make sure you find a Dr. you are both comfortable with. DOn't be afraid to ditch Dr's if you don't feel they are meeting your needs... We went through 3 before we found our current one. The Dr will need to be approved by both of you, as you will also be dealing with them...

Nothing pissed me off more then the Dr. telling me to shut up he his talking wiht his paitent:mad:

My mother was diagnosed in summer of 1987 while I was away working on a fishing boat out in Washington.

It's mostly in her legs and vision...and she gets wiped out pretty easily if she doesn't take care.

She quit snowmobiling last year.

know people up here with it...they fair with it from extremely well to the worse situations....i have heard from talking to a lady that was bank manager that got it that stress was a factor that can worsen it...she changed her job situation and it helped remarkably...second third opinions..alternate thoughts to consider natural medicine with the doctors...and prayers...

A good neurologist with experience with MS patients is very important.

we have a very large clinical and research group at the Cleveland Clinic that specializes in MS. PM me if you want some additional details or recommendations.

there is some emerging literature that exercise may be beneficial for patients with MS. One of the difficult aspects is that MS affects temperature regulation so for some patients it is hard to exercise for any real duration or intensity.

Lots of reasons to be hopeful; try not to focus on "worst case" or "final phases" of the diagnosis.

This post was referred to me by my brother. I then decided to register here to post my wife and I's experiences. First off, your post about yesterday, took me back 10 years to the day my wife was diagnosed. Hers started with what she thought was pinkeye. She went to the docter, who referred her to a eye doctor because is was not pinkeye. The eye doctor referred her to a Neurologist because he said something was blocking the optic nerve. The brain scan was done as well as other test to confirm diagnosis. It was M.S.
Life for us was different from that day on. I can continue with our story if eveyone would like, or PM me and we can talk about questions you may have.

My oldest brother's wife was diagnosed with MS a few years ago. She seems to be doing OK with it. I'm not privy to the entire run of symptoms but when we get together, she seems OK. I guess it depends on how bad sh has it. Sorry to hear of your wife's diagnosis. Whatever happens, and I imagine that you'll stand by her, let her know that you are there for her. She can focus on the fight and you can take care of her. Good Luck

my mom has had MS for around 14 years or so now. other than completely changing her attitude and personality she is in good shape. doctors told her she would be blind and in a wheel chair within the first few years. she found the drug Betaseron and does injections every other day. it has helped tremendously!

Thank you

I wanted to post a quick thanks to everyone that responded. Before Tuesday I didnt even know what MS was. Now I have a fairly good grasp of the disease and also have an idea on what to expect. Thanks again, and I may still have some questions once some of this stuff sinks in a bit.

My wife was diagnosed with MS 2 years ago. The best thing I can tell you is to be there for her the rode is only as bumpy as you both make it. It was hard for her to execpt it at first, mostly because she watched her mother go through it. If you want to talk more about it pm me . Im from helena also.
