Wide skis

I see lots of yahmahas with wider skis. Does this help with flotation? does is effect side hilling

Hey Fast

Yes and i have heard yes.

Do to the heavy front ends of the 4 strokes the more surface area of the wider skies helps in floatation quite a bit and keeps the front from diving so much. I have heard that they effect side hilling but I personally have not noticed a substantial different either way. I am running the gen III's on my nytro currently and like them a lot.
A lot of people on snowest and TY swear by them However quite a few people claim that the old style 08-09 Yamaha stock mountain ski skies are better and were loosely modeled after the powder pro ski from what i have read in the past.
The Simmons Gen III make it a little tougher to steer in marginal snow conditions and icy trails because to their duel keel design but work great in powder snow. I believe that is the reason why a few people say the stock skies work better all around because of the effect on steering effort. I know slydog has made a wider ski but have heard very little about how well they work. More people are running the Simmons skies i guess.
I know a few people have trimmed the back of the wider skies (gen II and gen III) to help side hilling but when you consider the ski itself is only 1/2 wider then the stock ski at the spindle i am not sure you get any more benefit to trimming the skies at all.<O:p</O:p
Christopher did a review on the Gen III skies on here last year. do a search. Good luck

I have been running the 8" Powder Hounds for a couple of years now and really like them for flotation. They work very well on the trail also. As far as sidehilling I have not done as much as I want to but with the addition of the Skinz front end this year that should help out.

I hated them, I was so happy to go back to the stock ski. That was the gen 2's
I personally prefer the stock ski.

Stock skis for me -

For the money ($400?) I would rather have Skinz air-frame boards (or something similar), IMO that is a lot better bang for the buck as far as improvements go on a Nytro. Different strokes for different folks though I guess.
