why not just modify stock intake?

untill i have $$ for a BDX black box intake i was wondering why a few simple mods to the stock intake wouldn't help? I'm not talking about pulling the horn on the hood and running a pre filter on the tube like others have done, but just adding some holes to the stock intake. Like a few 1in holes on the top of the box (where the clutching chart is) just behind the nose hood vents, covered with frogskinz. Wonder if you could go all the way through nose and into the bottom of the stock intake box and cover w/ some skinz also. that way you are drawing fresh cold air from down low in the front like the aftermarket boxes and still have the stock horn drawing air from up by the windshield. I know all that plastic for the stock horn is heavy but it seems like it should draw plenty of air if the hood is covered especially with some mods..
 
I would leave it alone as well. None of the aftermarket intakes add HP, at least on the M8. Some may even loose HP, but it might be worth a horse or two to loose the 8lbs. What your talking of doing would be like adding bulleyes to the airbox. It might help a little bit if the stock intake gets plugged, but I would still leave it alone. Good Luck!:beer;
 
Run the BDX box its not going to be much more than what your going to end up paying for all the vent you need to buy and you lose 8lbs
 
Here is a kit I made for the Stock airbox. Pm me if you want to give it a try. I have sent a few kits out to dealers for R&D. I have no idea if it will add power or loose power still waiting for feedback.

SnowBound the "wing" vents were exactly what i was thinking to pull some cold air from the nose vents, but with the rest of the intake still hooked up.guess i won't mess with it for now and just wait and see if i can get the BDX, it seems like the best for the $.
 
I'd like to give one suggestion for the bat wings -system:
Could you add piece of plastic behind the airbox so it encapsulates the front part of the hood to own partition? This provides engine gets cold air through the holes of the hood and not the hot air from the pipe. Just simple plastic wall which fits into bottom of the hood. This airbox combined with frogskinz this might be quite simple and working mod?

I'll save you the R&D. I did almost the exact same thing to my stock airbox and using the stock venting (i.e. no mesh hood or extra vents) it will work ok on a trail sled. In fact it works pretty well on a trail sled because you are connstantly moving plenty of fresh air forward through the hood. However on a mountain sled where you are making a lot of revs (i.e. underhood heat) it will get too hot under the hood and trip the air sensor in the airbox and put the sled into limp mode. It would do this even on the coldest of days on a long pull. sorry but its the truth.
 
what if you cut two 1 1/2 holes beside each other, right above the air horn on the hood side and cover with a frog skin? this is what cat did on the 1000's as part of the update. just a thaught!
 
Polarisfornow did you remove the stock plenum and just run a modified airbox. You can run it with the stock plenum then you might not draw in as much hot air. A block off plate might help, but the vents are located on top and a block off plate could restrict airflow. This was just a simple alternative rather then cutting holes in the airbox and gluing on mesh. We also use frogzskins on all our intake and clutch side vents.
 
If it gets that hot under the hood to trip the sensor would it not stand to reason that the air assembly attached to the hood directly above the pipe would be soaking up a bunch of heat? I would try the Moflow vents on the airbox and add a bunch of hood vents also. I just added the Timbersled intake and a bunch of hood vents to my M1000 and will post results when i get sled back together for a ride.
 
the moflo vents would probably work ok if you got the hood sealed up good to where no powder got in. on one ride last year i tried taking the plenum out of the hood and just running a piece of prefilter over the intake horn on the air box. it turned out to be one of the fluffiest days of the year and my hood vents were letting powder through and it was sucking water right through the prefilter and causing it to bog out. i pulled the prefilter off and the hole inside of the box was coated with water and ice. if the prefilter let the water through i would imagine the mesh would to.
 
ran this setup for 2 seasons not a problem, never had any problem sucking air from inside the hood no matter if all the vents were plugged or not. think the sucking hot air from inside the engine compartment is more of a myth than anything else. it sure never affected the way my sled ran... i'm running the bdx box now, but all the vents for it are plugged as soon as you leave the trail.

I ran mine basically exactly like sandman ran his except I managed to put in about 10 more bulls eyes vents all over the lower shelf area. for me it became an area that just was practically a magnet for snow to lay on and pulled in snow a couple times as well. I tried a few variations of this setup. I ran a barrier between the pipe and the airbox made out of heat resistant tape stuff ( lol I dont remember exactly what it was called) and that didn't really help much. IDK maybe the fact that I was running a modded 800 and sw pipe made a difference. I couldn't get the hot air out of that sled until I punched holes in the front bumper and ran the bdx.
 
The Timbersled intake draws only air from the inside and works great. I agree with sandman on this. I think the mod he did would work just fine. I really don't think the bdx intake gets much air from outside after the holes get plugged in deep snow. And when you go to sell the sled everyone knows it was a mod. Sandman, what is your opinion? Would you spend the money on the bdx kit or just run you free mod?

I also pulled one headlight and installed some screen to get more heat out.
 
Wouldn't it be better to put the extra venting on the bottom of the stock air box and then add BDX's front bumper vent kit? This way you won't suck in much under hood heat.

Would it be beneficial to wrap every square inch of the stock plenum with heat tape to keep the air cooler as it runs down to the air box?
 
yeah it prob would work to put venting on the bottom of the stock box but the only reason I didn't do that was I felt like there wasn't enough room to do a vent in the bumper and a vent in the airbox. Like it was a direct source right into the motor for snow to get in to. I don't think I explained that very well but the bottom of the airbox is right up against the bumper. Its just my thought process that I came up with. Doesn't mean its right or wrong.
