Why ballance clutches???

I'm still left unfulfilled with the responses on this topic. It is no clearer to me, what is done when balancing. Other than of course making sure the weights are exactly the same weight. :face-icon-small-dis

CLUTCH BALANCING

Catman,

I can tell you this for fact, On my old 2002 EDGE-X 800 AFTER the SLP balance job, approx 8-9 lightening holes, you could feel the difference in the handle bars (noticeably less vibration) 6400 miles , no crank failure, .0025" crank run-out, coincidental, maybe?

On the other 2 sleds, I honestly couldn't tell a noticeable difference (1 or 2 lightening holes in those clutches)

After research, I have found out the factories use a dual plane dynamic (spin) computerized balancer...it's cost is approx half a million dollars...one company spins it 3 times 1 to find out where it's off 2 times to validate....some shops are using static balancers (bubble).. some spin by hand and drill the low spot.....

Are we to believe small aftermarket companies have made this investment in tooling.??.and just because there were holes drilled in it, it was off and now better?? It turns into an opinion that we can't prove or disprove...what a way to make a buck....

Some things to think about....some say mass production is bad....but with CNC machines I think things are pretty close....just some thoughts...

BALANCING THE CLUTCH, NOT THE WEIGHTS FOR NOW

Mac,

Forget about the weights for a moment, as they usually balance then WITHOUT weights and spring

It's the sheave/spyder that's off, that';s why they're drilling the lightening holes into.

Thanks for the input Kraven....I thought I was going to get yelled at by someone....lol....you put it very nice...

Uh, cool. Thanks Kraven. That makes sense now. Do they just spin the clutch on a machine or something? Is this how they can calibrate the differences?

MacDawg,
Please see my post from above...I called around and got some info about how they do it at the factory...If you want more indepth info from my conversation with them pm me...
