Why are we this way?

So, its the end of April, our riding areas are quickly melting away and yet we are all so reluctant to give away our "secret riding areas." I keep seeing all year, people asking about great riding areas. Which is the reason we all read these threads....right. But why is it that when a person asks where the snow is or where to ride everyone says "P.M. me and I'll give you the details." Even then the details are vague and none descriptive. Why are we all this way? I understand, I have a few secrets as well, however its the end of April and I still cant get a straight answer from most people. Are we all that selfish that we can't share. I mean the snow is almost completely gone, it melts so fast that sometimes I can't even find the trail I took in the day before.

So,,,,,,,here is what I know. The Lincoln Bowls need a week from now to actually drive to a good spot to leave from....thanks to whoever drove the surburban into the snow to finally break trail. Unless we can drive a vehicle into Seeley Lake from the parking lot....it's almost done. Mrshall lake drainage was awesome awesome the trail from the parking lot is rough and is almost completely dry. However when we got past the lake it was great. It snowed really really hard and we had a great day. I'm heading to Skyland next weekend assuming that is dry down low and excellent up high. Last year I went there and had 2' of fresh snow and that was 4-27-2013 and last year was terrible on snow. After that I will head to the bowls to end my year and my last ride on my m1000. My only point is that I have zero problems telling people where the snow is, or where to go to find it. If you want to know just ask I don't mind sharing. Maybe you could meet me there and owe me one. Kings Hill is still good I hear, with most of the snow being in Spur Park and areas around there. I hope this helps some of you. Also an area by Potomac sounds like it has been good too.

Was in Cooke over the weekend. we rode from town and they have been getting snow. There is more snow there then I've ever seen. It will be there for a good while.

We all have our favorite spots and most of us like to keep them to ourselves. I live fairly close to a couple of areas with a much larger population than where I live and it is really hard to find days when you can find good, untracked snow. It seems that the people from these larger areas don't have to work for a living. No matter when you go out everything is tracked up. We have been riding up to 25 miles of logging roads and ridges (not groomed trails) just to get to areas where we are away from other people. I am not being selfish and I know that the snow belongs to all of us but, one of the things that makes a great day for our riding group is not seeing other people. We have found that you need to get further out to get away from other people so you can have that great snow that we all wish for. I am not sure if anything is secret, just not advertised. Now, as the snow quickly vanishes, there are less and less areas to ride so people get real secretive about the "secret spot". If somebody takes me into their "secret spot" I never go back in there unless I am with that person. Kind of like hunting and fishing. I am old school enough to respect other people's wishes. Have a good rest of the year, next year is only 7 months away. :face-icon-small-win

When you find the goodies, why do you wanna give it away?

I know i spend summer on bikes, google earth and foot chasing down little nooks and crannys to have fun in. Then, every yahoo who comes up the trail behind me comes up and follows my tracks and they shred it.

My crew spends a lot of time hunting for personal fun pockets. We have plenty of spots I have never seen tracks in. Mainly due to insanely complex access. So The LAST thing I will do is tell someone where it is. When it hasn't snowed for a week, I want to be able to go up and shred untouched pow and not have to hunt for it. I just go where I know it will be. Same as hunting, fishing, etc. Hard work pays off. It takes a lot of time and effort to scout and bust a trail into so many places. then onces its done, now everyone and there mom can ride in. Dont want that!!

Your talking whole riding areas which is different then specific spots, also many of them have very little population around them. Nobody is rushing to skyland to spring ride as its hours from most decent population centers. When you get closer to cities, you say its good up this one spot and now EVERYONE goes there. bam lot is full. good luck finding fresh.

I didn't hear you giving out many secret areas or information. The bowls are a large area, same with Seeley. Tell us right where you go and when you will be there. I will get there one hour before you. And riding areas don't change year after year so why would I show a place in the spring and not expect them to come back in the fall or winter?

We were in Cooke this past weekend as well, I am trying to get a few people together and go back on the 9/10th of this month. Might try the Lincoln bowls this weekend, if not might try Kings Hill..................

Yo......Carl-ly

I didn't hear you asking about any of my spots. Why are your panties in such a bunch? Your one of the people on these forums that I'm talking about. If you want to know my spots in the bowls why don't you just freaking ask me. If you must know.....After I hit the sign at the end of the road I go up the first little hill there and then take a right. I head up one of those many drainages and play there for the first half of my day. Then I will follow one of those drainages up to the very very right bowl. After that I will play in a bowl that is located right before the very right bowl. Be careful when choosing a spot through the trees, but if you got a big enough pair, you'll get to the bowl I'm talking about. Someone of your stature should know where I'm talking about. It is just to the left before you get to the very right bowl.....

After that I head to the main bowl/middle bowl. If your looking at the bowl from the bottom I hit that little gap between the trees and head 3/4 of the way up the main bowl. At that point I take an immediate left and head down into another little bowl. After playing in there I will go up that little bowl and take another left which gets me into the lake bowl. By that time the day is almost over and I hit the lake bowl a few times and head to the truck.

That wasn't very hard was it???????? Thanks for your information is Seeley Lake!!!!!! Just keep hiding your areas cause if your like everyone else, after you have left an area I'll just keep hitting the actual technical lines you left for me! Thanks,
RIley

Getting angry at people for not telling you exactly where they go isn't helping your cause. Open Google Earth and figure it out. Maybe the problem is nobody wants to bring you along because you are a whiner.

Yeah I guess so. I generally don't ride with a bunch of people. I just thought the whole point of these forums was to get to know different areas. Otherwise why are we all looking at the Montana forum. I'm not complaining....to much....I was just asking why we are that way? Hence the title of this forum. I get it, but I'm just looking for different areas to ride. Geez slit my throat and rip out my tongue for asking......Typical....answers from young people. Anyway thanks for the help guys! Again, I don't have a problem telling people my areas.. Why do all of you. Maybe you should just not be on these forums. Thought that was the point of forums for a specific area. Guess not.

I think the point of the state specific forum is to find out what the snow is like in a general area. Look at the Wyoming section, there is a sticky where people post snow conditions in general areas. Not that they went to this junction then up this chute then around this tree. In multiple posts in the Seeley section I have posted pictures and descriptions of the areas I ride. Plus, why would you want to ride where someone else was just at, instead of knowing a general area and finding your own honey holes. I know I found one in Seeley this year that I have ridden by for years. Am I gonna tell anyone where it's at, nope, I don't like riding tracks. And you're area in Lincoln is decent, but try taking a left at the end of the road instead of right. There's the only "secret" area I know of in Lincoln.

Carlc,

Thanks. I appreciate the input for Lincoln. I will try the left side next time. I tried it once when I was in high school before the burn and it didn't work out so well for one in our group and we had to leave his sled there overnight. He wedged the thing so hard under a fallen tree it took all day to get it out then after that he put it upside down into the creek, rough day for us all. It wasn't my intention to bash, I just hate going to a new area and riding the groomed trail all day cause I have no idea where the fun areas are. I spent to much time riding in Seeley always looking where to go and coming up short. Nobody ever told me where the better areas were til last weekend. Wish I would have known where to go before that and hope I didn't get to your secret spot. I'm sure I didn't cause I had to turn around due to how much it was snowing. I didn't want to lose my tracks into where I went in.

WheelHouse. I spend all winter on google earth. It's my slow time of the year. I take pictures where I ride and where I would like to ride. Then when I get home I gps the coordinates and trace them back to where I rode and where I would like to ride. That's how I found the back way into the bowls,,,,,which before the closure was a great way to get into the Lincoln bowls. Talking about the way from the contour road. Tried from cotter basin but the snow sucks. Google earth changed the game. I might be old school but very tech savvy.
