why are bolt on turbo kits $1600 for a honda civic and 5k + for a sled?

For one the GT turbo is more than double sometimes tripple the price of those POS ones that come in those kits.

a lot of these turbo kits for honda civics are based around the T3/T4 hybrid turbo which is a very common turbo used on a lot of small commercial diesel engines and such so yes mass production comes into play. these kits usually come without any fuel system upgrades or gauges. you can use the kit without the upgraded fuel system but only run 3 or 4 pounds of boost. as far as using that same turbo on a sled i don't think it would work real well those kits are made for engines with 1.5 to 2.5 liters of displacement where as your sled might have 1 liter max. would probibaly make for some decent turbo lag.

I find it kinda funny too, heres an edelbrock turbo kit for a civic, with a brand new garett GT28R, intake manifold, piggyback fuel system (boondocker style) 4 extra injectors, intercooler, everything and i mean everything a guy needs for a bolt on setup http://www.edelbrock.com/sportcompact_new/mc/turbo/turbo_perf.shtml These kits run $3500, using top quality parts. With all the turboing of sleds going on now I bet that boondocker could definately sell their kits for $3800 entry level price, as for dynoing/testing/seat time, well come on they are riding arent they, not shoveling s**t into the wind. These guys arent blowing up motors left right and center now, its plumb it in tune it and test it, get it ready for market. I bet you could bring boondockers a sight unseen entirely new motor/sled with a familiar fuel system and they could size/plumb/tune/test it from scratch all in one week. Back when there were only a handfull of hand built one off turbos i could understand the high price, but now with it being more common, every guy who buys a turbo "KIT" shouldnt have to pay for the entire plumb/tune/test, come off it, if it costs them anymore than $10000 per new modle to make it work then there is a problem. I would bet that on kits like those for the apex that have been around for a while, albeit updated and improved upon boondocker is still makeing $2500 profit. And for those of you who think turbos are very pricey check this out http://www.turbochargers.com/store/index.php?cPath=21

Meh, its sorta moot if you ask me. If you dont want to pay the price then dont. Obviously Boondockers, OVS, Twisted, MCX, Alpine, Synergy, CPR, and Impulse are getting away with there prices because there are alot of turbo's running around now :)

If you dont want to pay the $5-6k then dont, those that do, will be smiling ear to ear. Like this---------------> :D See how there are no dimples? The smile reaches to the end of his head, Impossible I know, but it happens

Sled turbo systems are more like one off custom setups compared to the auto industry. That edelbrock kit was all cast metal which is much cheaper to produce by volume that the custom welded aluminum kits. Also, smaller motors have a difficult time with tuning compared to larger motors. The transients (ie throttle response) is difficult with smaller motors, especially sleds where you are going from on off on off and the engine can move a whole lot of rpm's very quickly.

I think the most has to do with volume and the fact that most parts are sled specific, meaning there is little crossover between different sled kits. I would assume car kits have many more shared component's.

Just some thoughts.

SO TRUE NATE... :D.. still smiling from this winter.... haha

If you think it's rediculious expensive, try putting one together yourself, if you assume your time is worth nothing, and don't mind missing a season of riding tuning, you'll find that it only costs like $2500 to put together, if you value your time at $5/hour, they cost like $10000 to put together

The parts and materials aren't ridiculously expensive, but you pay for all their R&D time, and the custom Airbox and pipe, and such. The CPI kit for the Doo 800 uses a Mitsubishi Turbo, from an Eagle Talon. When my buddy kept eating Turbos (if ANYTHING goes through the turbo, its game over. He was eating Reeds like he owned stock in Boyesen) We were getting them from Auto Wreckers, for a very reasonable price...

haha this is a good topic....i remember my dad being like its kinda dumb when it cost the same to put a turbo on a sled and on one of my CAT excavators...but at the same time when ever he gets on my sled hes like it was worth every penny!

Tell him to get rid of the Boyesen reeds and he won't have near as much trouble. I have tried all the different aftermarket reeds in my turbo sleds and the ONLY reeds that I have ever had any luck holding up under boost are the stock ones.

There isn't a Honda on the planet with a $1600 bolt on turbo kit that will run anything like a properly tuned turbo sled. At least not for more than a couple of seconds. Not saying you COULDN'T get a Honda to run like that, you just couldn't do it for $1600.

i grew up in san diego and did the turbo rice rocket thing as a kid.......and no!....i mean NO!!! turbo kit under 4K is worth a flip.....Greedy and Jackson have been in the game for many years with a great track record, most people who want a tuner car to run more than 4 miles all get Greedy of Jackson

And before the big block dummies come hatin.......i had a 98 intergra type R with a jackson SC for 3 years.....finally sold it and gave a 95 Z28 camaro a try....put about 5k in the checvy product and still hated it, too heavy and cant corner or bounce in and out of traffic like a light jap car......ill never own a heavy fast car again.......thats just me....and anyone else who has had a jap tuner, they are a hoot!!

fun fact: the cheapest tuner is a 95ish honda hatchback with the prelude 2.2 and a greedy twin turbo kit.....not a daily driver, but scary fast and scary cheap

do mean Greddy? or is this a different company?

I have seen very few bolt on and go turbo kits (IE no tinkering after the install of the makers kit ) you either have to play with the clutching or the fuel, the fuel specs and clutching specs are just a starting point so really the end user or consumer is finishing the RD for there product which to me means they should lower there price because i dont really like spending 6000 of my hard earned money to have there unfinished kit thats just my .02 though take for what its worth an opinion
