Whos putting a Supercharger on their Nytro

Anyone considering a SC for thier sled. I was told by my dealer that he will put one on the Nytro for me $7800.00 installed, and this will be reliable and better than a turbo.

He said the SC is better as there is no lag, there is no engine work needed and it will be more reliable. The only draw back is with the SC you cant put over 300 horse in there but at least a guy would get a respectible 200 -220 horse.

Any advantages and disadvantages to either?

I have installed a turbo and two S/C's. The MCX is a good kit with realiability.
On the other hand a S/C is a differnent story. Install times are similiar, but MPI don't know chit about tuning their sc or getting them to run. I spent months waiting for different parts to make it work properly. Stage 1 kits are fairy easy to get dialed in but a stage 2 requires parts that MPI doesn't even supply.
1. you need to add a vacumm activated BOV, not in kit.
2. Build a cold air intake (last weekend we ran one without and mine with a cold air intake and it was a world of difference in the 2ft powder.)
3. Torque the chit out of the taper locks 3 or 4 times. Run it for a few minutes, torque, run, torque etc, etc.
4. Silicone the gems controller.
5. MPI's clutching is out in left field.
6. Customer support sucks.
7. Quality of product is top notch.
8. Touch the throttle and gone, great boondocking.
9. Need a fuel regulator, not in kit.
10. Need a A/F, not in kit.
11. Need a boost guage, not in kit.
12. When you have problem MPI is glad to charge you for everything that you need.
13. No motor work=race fuel C12@ 14lbs.

I finally had a decent ride after multiple trips of tuning and waiting for parts. It is working good now but, I would not install another one. Go with a turbo.

That is a great reply KC!

I have talked to guys who have asked me how much tuning I had to do on my turbo(MCX) and of course none but it does not sound the same for the SC. They are always making adjustments rather than riding.
One other complaint, the instant boost in the trees is to much and causes lots of trenching where a turbo can be managed much, much better.

Thanks Rioplay!!

I am supposed to meet up with some guys that are riding MCX so it will be great to see and feel the difference. I found the sc good to manage in the trees, so we will see the diiference between the two.

We are putting a supercharger on ours. Our own design, not MPI's. Our supercharged Apex and RX-1's are a blast to ride. As far as trenching that's a bunch of crap. A supercharger has the most linear power of all the boost designs. Hell our engagement is at 4000 rpm. Show some control. Our Apex is making right at 290 hp at 19.5 #'s boost. And that's the way we ride them all the time. We are also using our new ThunderChiller liquid to air intercoolers now. Check out the rest of my videos on youtube.com thunderracingengines for more of our supercharged sleds and then tell me how turbos have zero lag. We will be bringing our sleds to the drag races at West Yellowstone this year if you want to check them out. Turbos are cool but I'd rather be Blown.

I have built 6 superchargers and have been very satisfied with the performance. KC has some good points above, but they are all easily overcome. I think the most frustrating thing in the industry is that you think you can pull the turbo or charger out of the box and go and when you call the company that makes them they say "When you find out, let us know!"

We have found some tricks on the taperlocks and have no problems there.

You do need a blow off valve and some other goodies.

I am building some turbo stuff right now, so I will let you know how the two compare back to back, but right now I think the supercharger is a definite option.

Soon I hope. But we have always been the ugly stepchild of boost. We have to beg borrow or steal a prototype or pre-production sled to package our stuff on. Yamaha of Blackfoot brought this one to us but we have only had a few months to prototype it. These guys are great to work with. When Yamaha brought the Nytro around the first time to the dealers they called me and said they would have the sled for only a couple of hours, so Chris kept the driver busy while Dan and I stripped it on the trailer to see if we could put our blower on it!!! I will say that this is our best set-up yet. So far it will only require one hole to install. And we use a by-pass valve, and make our own pulleys so they don't fall off. We hope to bring the prototype to West Yellowstone for all to see.

RACINSTATION, have you dynoed any SC's yet. I know ths sounds like a stupid question but is there a difference in HP #'s at the same boost with different systems, drawing in from a cold air intake.

I snow checked a 2006 Apex mountain in the fall of 2005, I put on 700miles in February 2006, then I installed the MPI stage 2 kit, they did not have the proper pulleys and stuff for stage 2 so I was running the 12lbs stage one for the first season.
from that point until now i put on 400miles with the supercharger kit.
I have since removed the s/c kit and installed a 2860 Synergy turbo kit.
I ride in the mountains and I tell you what! NEVER NEVER again would I ever consider a supercharger! and here is why:
My Synergy kit is every bit as responsive as a super charger...would bet pinks on that!
I have been running 15lbs of boost on Premium fuel! 12lbs on a sc is 50/50 race premium
The s/c on climbs seemed to hit a wall and fell on its face on the top end!
The fuel mapping was brutal! stumble and stalls if your in and out of the throttle...because of no BOV! my opinion.
Fuel box watered out every ride! no s**t here i ran one on controller in my pocket, cause I ALWAYS changed them out...and yes i siliconed them up etc...
Biggest hate of the supercharger.......is the 20+lbs of weight in the nose of the sled, the s/c was a beast to control, completely pulled the fun handling charateristics of the Apex away!
I then sold the supercharger kit to a guy on Totally Yamaha..never got paid for the kit!

So as you can see i feel that every dollar you sink into a MPI kit is a waste, so why not give me the money and I'll save you months of agony, then next year install a turbo...any kit would do and Im sure you will be happy....next year!

"Whos putting a Supercharger on their Nytro"

The guy who hasnt done his homework and is going to be super fuggin pissed off in the near future. I love the idea of the SC, but they cant make them work worth sh!t to be honest. KC Boost is a prime example, and i have to give him mad props for being one of the only honest guy posting about the many issues the SC's have. I've never spoke to a owner of an SC in real life that was happy with it, every single one of them said "i wish i went turbo route".

Im sure theres the odd guy out there that says he's happy, but it might be 1 in 100.

EDIT: The above is to do with ONE s/c manufacture, and its not the ThunderCharger. Im dying to try a Thundercharger !!!!

We put a SC on a Phazer, love the way it runs now, won't run with MCX,but the throttle response is unbelievable,it makes the machine an absolute blast to ride.
I seem to have the mapping figured now but I can see it being a maintenance nightmare, it's already taken out a belt, stupidest tensioning system in the world.
Right from the get go I thought it was stupid idea to have the air intake under the side cover next to all the heat,so I ran an intake out like the side mount Boon Docker. The jetting seems to be spot on and consistant with a cold air intake.
The MPI kit is has some fantastic pieces, they helped out alot getting the jetting nailed, but I think if you want a gas and go turnkey unit, this isn't it, if can't wrench it yourself,,,,you'll be selling it.

Would love to try the Thunder Charger.

Have ridden a couple of SC units and they seem to hit a wall as far as power goes, where the turbo keeps pulling. They do have more response on the bottom end though. My opinion is that I prefer less power in the tight trees at low speeds and prefer the power to come on when I lay into the throttle, that is why I prefer a turbo. Talked to a dealer that had done a few, he was actually fine tuning it for his customer. I rode it, he rode my 12lb MCX Apex and hasn't done a SC since, LOL. All the MCX turbos I have had and put in have been good and easy to setup. 1000k on this Nytro at 16lbs and the lag is only an issue on the internet. I could see the SC being an option for a trail rider but not the best for a mountain rider.

Your last point is correct!!! We cannot condem a company that hasn't even tryed to prove themselves yet.

I am meeting up with Randy hopefully 13-14th, you going to be there? Want to swap sleds for a bit and try a turbo, and get your or Randy's opinion on my S/C.

I ride with 2 mpi sc's..Both have had many issues Went out today and this is the first time he was happy with it..mind you we changed the clutching totally from what mpi said..Not even close to the turbo tho he'll hold with me until about 30 mph then its bye bye by about 20 lenghts on Morton lake
