Who's heating/cooling with geothermal?

Seem very wastful to me, Why pump all that water out when you can just have a closed loop?? If you drill a well and don't hit Good water then what?? With closed loop you Don't need to hit water either.

.

The problem I've seen on open loop is, depending on your water quality, you might have a high maintance problem due to crud building up in the heat exchanger coil. Also have to consider wear and tear on your pressure pump to maintane flow. Best is vertical down into ground water. You'll be dealing with a more constant ground temp year round. Horizontal will be effected by winter temps sooner as the frost goes down. Also in a dry year you won't have as good a heat transfer as the ground water level drops.
