Who's Had This Problem???

M

mtn mike on boost

Well-known member
not trying to write a book here, but im giving as much info as possible....
06 m7 w/ aero turbo.installed turbo at begining of the season and have had it running very well from mid season on.... egts at wot 1300 and a/f nice and safe 11.4-12.3(not related to my problem)
anyhow for the longest time, not sure when it started, but if the sled is cold
(sat for more than 12hr) its been very hard to get rpms up enough for the sled to move.engagement is 5000rpm, but when you throttle up to that it bogs out and falls on its face.eventually after a few tries it will go and after ridding a miniute, problem gone.?????

so here is what happened, took a trip up to pemberton saturday
(BOY YOU BIG DAWG GUYS MISSED IT BY ONE WEEK)sunny, no wind, snow softenened up nicely.....had a great day....UNTILL!!!!!

went back to the gas drop after burning my first 15 gal of fuel and went to do a pull after topping off and would only boost to 6 lbs cleanly and maxed at 8 lbs but ran like s@#$! so i checked everything and couldnt find a problem.eventually after play w/ my fuel controller, got to run pretty ok but just wasnt 100% anymore.road another hour or so and went to do a big pull , it was running good and #s looked good. half way up this thing it just fell on its face, not even enough power to dig in...luckly i was able to back down this one(NOT ANY FUN)

played w/ it somemore and eventually towed it out. sled starts right up and sounds good idles fine, egt's are equal, but now (like when its cold) wont rev up enough to engage, or if it does, it will more a few inches and crap out again.if i hold the rpm up over 4000 for a few seconds before raising it up enough to move the sled, it will move snapper and further but will bog out once again.

what YOUR guess???

i checked both clutched and booth seem good. has good compression, i bypassed the fuel controller and same problem. disconnected the charge tube, same problem. swapped ecm's and still same....

on a side note, not sure how this could be related, but this ride as well as my last ride, this sled is useing at least twice as much oil as normal.i had it set at 38-1, now its useing more like 15-1, and not leaking.

anyways sorry this went on so long, im just looking for some help.everyone i was ridding w/ thinks i twisted the crank and that throwing the timming off. not sure i agree because of it doing the same thing when its cold. almost seems like in the past, once it builds up enough heat, the problem corrected itself, and now the heat wont correct whats wrong....PLEASE HELP!!!!

IMO these things always come down to the most basic. i highly doubt that anything mechnaical, much less a crank is your problem. Somewhere you have a leak. i would bet on it. At first the leak was small, but now its gotten bigger to the point that nothing will correct it, except finding the leak!

First thing I thought of was boost leak also. Have seen airbox have a hole worn through before....not the factory box, but the one for a turbo.

doesnt the fact that i pulled the charge tube, leaving the air box inlet open to breath like a naturally asperaited motor rule this option out???i did check the airbox to throttle bodies and appear to be sealed tight(the box actually bolts to the throttle bodies)are you talking about an engine leak like a crank seal???

what do you mean you "pulled the charge tube, leaving the air box inlet open to breath"?? the turbo can not build boost doing this, unless i am not understanding your question.

i would go thru and check every weld on your pipe, and y pipe. Check your boots around your throttle bodies, charge tubes, intercooler, etc.

don't worry its not a motor leak....

That's a lot of oil Mike, gotta believe that could hurt performance. You gotta be burning it if it isn't leaking. Can you pull a jug and see how much oil is puddled up in the bottom of the crank.

Take the turbo off and run it. If the turbo is toast, the exhaust will have a hard time getting out. Stick your finger in the turbine and give it a spin to see how easy it turns. You should almost be able to blow on it and turn it.
