I realize many of you are in the oil related field or another that will not suffer throughout this recession.

Our company has had substantially less work.
I received the bad news 2 weeks ago, but was working elsewhere a couple days later.
(Very fortunate)
I'm afraid there will be alot of layoffs & RIF in the next 6 months (possibly the next few years)

Who is worried & who feels secure & why?

I work at Boeing.....airlines are cutting back due to fuel costs and fewer people flying, I expect to see the huge backlog of orders begin to see cancelations and delays just like the early 1990's.....and the layoffs will soon follow.

My job remains secure. :) There is no shortage of crazies! However, the cost of hauling the crazies around has definitely cut into my profits.:(

fuel foes up ..gotta pass the buck....pretty sure that people will still spend somwhere

cuts into profits but ...the way I see it I have a job and can pay the bills when many others will be forced out

doing good so far here in billings, mt...at least in terms of staying busy but i am feeling the pinch definitely due to high gas prices. it effects how i pretty much view daily life so to speak. so that begs the question, if energy can be controlled(imo, it is being controlled malevolently so) can we be controlled? i am concerned that come next year, if things stay on the current projection, i will be surprised to see 40hrs a week. the common guy just cant sustain the escalating inflation. it will show up in my field no doubt.

i have a question that is not directly related but is pertinent. as my wages go up the governments share follows lock and step... correct? well then why isnt the tax structure revised accordingly as fast as inflation escalates? doesnt seem right whatsoever but perhaps someone can shed some light?? i am pretty sure i know the answer but perhaps there is a more technical and viable explanation.

Fortunately for my company there's laws that will guarantee us business and no shortage of alcoholics with court orders to use our product. But that's looking at just my company.

I am concerned about the economy as a whole, between fuel and the housing market I believe things are oing get worse before they get bette.r

Was just looking around for a graph of $/gallon of unleaded and $/bbl of crude vs. time, measured over the last 10 or 20 years. Couldn't find anything to back up my prediction of a sharp exponential growth in the past 3 years or so, and a nonproportional growth to the price of gas in the crude oil market.

I believe a lot of the problem is with market speculation rather than true supply and demand. Putting these speculators out of business either via government regulation or moving gasoline to a public utility will bring prices down to a reasonable level.

The housing market is something that's been on a downslope for a while, part of it is due to people not understanding what they're getting into with adjustable-rate mortagages. Can't fix stupidity, unfortunately. When all the people with ARMs that can't afford what they bought are out of a home, my guess is the market will pick up again.

But.... i'm no expert in any of this, so don't listen to me.

well I think my job is pretty secure we do alot of goverment jobs. but if not I am very good at doing lots of things, and if it gets that bad..well have a really nice trapping cabin far out in the woods..and I can sure go live off the land..trap in the winter and pan for gold in the summer...I think iit is going to get alot worse before it gets better..I think alot of businesses will fold as well as a lot of peeps will loose everything..and since I pretty much lost everything in a nasty divorce a few years ago ..I dont have alot to worry about....:D:beer;..I hope that we all still get to enjoy our hobbies in the future...:beer;

Are you the guy that is responsible for those alcohol swab test thingys that I have to use on my clients three times a week?

I feel pretty secure in my job, I just had a meeting with an executive last week about making sure I am happy and making sure I don't wander off. Plus my industry doesn't really mimic the overall economy.

As for the economy as a whole, I have some great concerns and think it will get much uglier before it gets better.

There is great volatility in the oil and gas markets, which has caused increased speculation and the recent drastic increases in oil and gas. However, the futures markets are so big, any sort of regulation or shut down could cause a huge vacuum which could only hurt things worse.

As for the housing downturn, things are not too bad here in big sky country. However, it will only be time before the out of staters with money flowing out of their pockets from their home sales will dry up. They say the market will rebound and it will become the way it was, over time. The one thing I do see is a glutton of home's on the market and I think it will stay that way for awhile. Increased talk over a large increase in new home buyers in the short term just doesn't make sense with the increases in gas, diesel, food, etc. and the fact the population itself is contracting.

The baby boomer generation is the largest generation we have and a great number of them are going to be hitting retirement age in the next 5 years. This could only further compound things already occurring.

I am no expert, just my views.

OH! Never had to deal with those. If my clients do something that would warrant that type of legal intervention the cops just kill them.

Dad just got his new pontoon a few weeks ago. Actually it was Daves last year. What would really be nice is a 2005 or newer supercharged Sportster for about $10-12k without having to drive to one of the coasts to get it.

Not true Mafesto, EVEN in Oil related business's costs are escalating (i.e. Fuel etc) like crazy but to be honest, the reason these huge oil companies are making large cash is that they don't spend it frivilously, they do indeed watch every penny, and us asking/telling them we are raising our rates a little to cover fuel doesn't sit well with them....They will then look for someone cutting prices just to get the job and not realizing that in our business we CAN'T quote a job for even next week as FUEL might raise 10 cents a little and that would make our BID not even breaking even....SO in summary, EVERYONE is and will be affected in a very negative way.....ALL COSTS ARE GOING UP, but compensation is not!
