Who Pays

So who pays for what? We have a group of 4 guys who normally ride together every weekend and the driver who drives every weekend doesn’t pay for fuel in the tow rig. We have lost 2 tires on the trailer in the past 2 weekends. Who should pat for the tires? How do you guys split the costs?

normally we split everything evenly..when it comes to breakdowns that is tougher..but I would say everyone should split the cost of tires that have blown....

If the trailer only gets used sledding than just split it 4 ways. The driver taking his truck/trailer every time should get him off the hook for fuel, I'm sure he doesn't charge for oil changes, kms/miles, truck maitenance etc.

It's just me and dad in the truck going sledding. We split everything.

But when we have a group that takes our anual fishing trip, we all split everything evenly. Unfortunately the maintenence of the equipment falls on the owner. He owns it for a reason; because he wants to use it. If he didn't want to go sledding, he wouldn't be driving up the mountain on that particular day. You are doing him as big a favor, by being there for him, as he is for you in providing a ride.

You should be obligated to half the gas though. If I were to have mechanical problems in my truck, or with my trailer, I wouldn't turn to everyone in the vehicle and take up a collection. I'd fix it.

My partner and I had a bering go on our way to Cooke this year on his trailer, as a result he needed 1 new tire berings and seals. We repaired the berings bought 2 new tires mounted (because it cost less with a rim for some reason) I offered to pay for at least 1/2 and was flatley refused. I think the polite thing is to at least offer, he and I switch back and forth between our rigs most of the time and usually split the cost of fuel but we at least usually offer to help for the minor things like tires or beer(he has had no problems with takeing me up on my polite offer to lend a hand helping him remodle his bathroom though)

^^^^I agree. Maintenance stuff, wear and tear, thats on my nickle. Ride alongs just pay for gas. Other wise it could get real ugly, complicated.
Ooops, fuel pump just went out on the diesel boys, pay up-I was haulin' your azzzes up the hill....

i agree on the maintenance to a piont is on the owner. i ride with a group of 4 the gas is covered by the 3 riders if something gos bad like the tires it is on the driver/ owner i all ways offer to help or offer to get his gas for his sled but usally get turned down.

On our outing we split everything, including oil changes, fuel filters, tires-road hazards.
(unless someone is driving & pulls a bonehead move-that makes it all on them)
We also alternate the use of vehicles.
If someone is always providing truck & trailer, then he's put up more than his share to begin with. So if your paying for fuel and happen to loose a couple of tires in the process, your still getting off cheap.

What about storage. I have an enclosed trailer and we use my rig and trailer every time, he doesn't have a trailer, just his truck. I don't mind driving and we split the gas. I don't expect him to help with maintenance on the truck or trailer but what about storage. His sled sits in my trailer year round. It's not in the way for me but it seems like he getting a free storage spot out of it. Do you think he should help out in any way. Do you guys that go with other people leave your sleds on one trailer or take them off everytime you go up.

what he said but the fuel pump on the dodge is all his.

what about hitting a deer and your not driving someone else is driving your truck. long ride 1000 miles drive all night long. should you guys split deductable or leave it on the owner

Whenever we take a group trip we split fuel costs only, we take turns on the rigs and we all understand mechanical issues are the owners gig. Out of the thousands of miles put on a rig a year how can one figure out that, that particular trip caused the tire to blow, fuel pump to go out, battery to die etc. As the rig owner it is simply a risk you take. As for buddies steppping up to the plate, they did for me. We have an annual Jet boat trip over to the snake river every year. This last year the week before the trip I lost one of my axles on my Jet boat trailer and ended up scrambling the entire week getting a new one built and put under the trailer. Without asking or expecting anything my buddies gave me some doe to cover the costs. It was greatly appreciated and reminded me why these guys have been my friends for the last 19 years.

It matters whos riding in the truck.
When my buds come, we split the gas bill. I usually drive as I have the nicest truck, and the outcome is usually somebody buys me dinner, another buys breakfast but I don't expect anything other than splitting the fuel.

When its just me and my father weekly ride, I pay all the fuel in the truck, and we switch off on who fills the sleds. He buys the beer and candybars, I do all the sled maintenance/buy the oils. We take my truck everytime as its a 3500 opposed to his 1500. It works out fine this way as he's retired (56 years old) and spent the first 18 years of my life paying my way.

X2!

It can go either way but it really depends on if your buddy needs the help. If he's tight on cash, and alot of us are right now, offering to help out is huge. If he's rolling in it, he'll probably never ask...but at least offer.

Obviously these 3 other guys rely on you, your truck and trailer. They should split the cost between the 3 of them. If they refuse, then explain to them that it is YOU that makes the payments on the truck, payments for the trailer, insurance and the security of having their sleds, gear and tools locked up when you stop at the local diner for a meal and a brew. If they don't like it, find a new group or ask that next season they each buy a truck and 4 place trailer and you can all take turns driving to the hill each week. That might change their tune.

I go with one group where the driver does not pay and I think that is the way it should be. This way if someone doesn't have a vehicle that works to pull a trailer and someone else is having to use his vehicle more often, it helps offset the inequity a little.

Another group I go with has everyone pay. I go and do it their way, don't agree with it, but do it. Some people just don't see the big picture and I don't see any reason to let it interfere with the fun of the trip. As far as maintenance it is obviously on the owner, trailer tires in my opinion depends on how much the trailer is getting used by the group. I have always wondered how to work a deductible if an accident happened, If I were in the truck and it wasn't anyones fault I would suggest we all chipped in. This situation has many possible bad outcomes, hope it never happens.

The way one group I go with is 50 for the trailer 50 for the pickup cause some times you pull somebody else's trailer. Then just split the fuel.

Another group just split the fuel.

When we head out it's usually a group of four . I do all the driving with my truck, deck & a four place enclosed . The fuel is paid for by the company , but the other guys will take care of my portion of the room & some meals . I try to pay but the argument begins ..

As for problems with the unit had a problem once & I never asked for a thing but they all helped out to get us back on the road. I guess it depends on what ur boys r willing to help out on for you & how bad they wanna ride.

I can't ask for a better bunch of riding buddies .....

I have a truck and trailer that is only used for sledding, never gets unhooked.
The truck usually leaves full of fuel, the fuel gets split some what evenly. But when we get home the truck fuel light is on and they never factor that last tank in rarely. I have to clean out their garbage, stains cause their slobs, wash down the unit etc. The truck and trailer is a 70g investment with out repairs and maintenance, and individuals think oh he needs it to go sledding, so if we cover some fuel it should be fine. I agree that they are not responsible for parts, but I am thinking of selling the truck and trailer, putting the money on the house and letting someone else in the group take the responsibility to get our AZZEZ to the hill for the next 20yrs, then i think their attitude would straighten out. "Go buy me a trailer for my sled to get hauled in like I did"
Sorry just venting a tad
