is that going down too much?
would a 20 be better?
did you get it done by doo for free?

thanks

Doo is doing mine for free. 19T on a 154, so no 19T on a 163 is not too low unless you want your mountain sled to go 100mph. I think they are running 19's on the 146's as well.

163s have a 49 bottom gear, so they are geared stock about the same as a 154 with a 19 top

the 19 top on a 163 is a bad idea, tried it, dont work.....im going to try the 23 top just for the hell of it, but the stock gearing should be fine, the clutch is junk, a 44/33 helix is the best doo has (i have one with 50ish miles on it for sell) as the DJ helix is the real ticket, prp/pnk primary spring and 22ish grams......im at 10K ele

19/49 on my 163.

I can't think of a time when gearing down a mountain sled didn't help.

With my gearing a can still go 80MPH.

Hatcher you must have one hell of a sled pulling 22g with a 160/350 spring and a DJ or 44/33 helix at 10,000ft. With the same setup, I am using 16g at 8,000ft in clicker 5.

anybody else with a 19 on a 163?

does anybody know if doo will cover the cost of changing gears on a 163?

the article only talks about 146 and 154s

xp

I have a 19 on a 163 and I am 265lbs and it works great as long as u clutch it right for ur elevation. I have ran a 20 on top too so I have tried them booth. if u r under 200lbs and have a stock sled I would definatly tell u to go to a 19 tooth. and u do not have to get a different chain I have over 600 miles on mine with a 19 tooth and no problems. u will want to add some wait after u gear down. my 2 cents

dealer is supposed to cover the gear change on the 163 also if requested. dealer just ordered a gear and chain for me. guess i'll have to buy the old one back if i don't like it.

gearing down affecting pin weight

Hmmmmm, Jdog good feedback, we will watch what happens to rpms and necessary pin weight when we do further testing on the 163 with the 19 on top.....my thought process tells me that the primary clutch will close further, causing belt to go higher (meaning clutch will take up the lower gear ratio that the chain/gears present to it), but that means the pin weight will be further from center and wouldn't that mean LESS weight is needed to exert the same belt squeeze force? SInce the further from center the more force would be exerted by a given weight (rpms being constant)....I will duck now as the clutching theory guys come on heavy...either way, field testing will tell me and my riding posse what will happen. Jdog, can you elaborate how much pin weight you added and how yours reacted to the change, may save us some work (i'm assuming you added weight to keep you in the same clicker #, since changin clickers changes ramp angles).

Is 19 tooth the answer??

By changing from a 21 to a 19 tooth top sprocket, that should increase the track speed when hillclimbing and therefore make it climb or pull better in the deep stuff or should I leave it ??? Would it then help out with the ****ty clutching that doesn't seem to hold RPM's after pulling some big climbs.. Just had DJ's kit put in and trying it tomorrow.. Had nothing but problems with the clutching on this.. 580 miles and they had to replace some bushings and cups or somethimg like that in the clutch already.. Arms have been sticking in the primary after 3 or 4 rides also..

How would a 19 top 45 bottom perform on the 163"?? Anyone running this.. Trying to make this sled rip and be consistant like my old m7, but i think I made a mistake. Don't like to get outperformed by a 153" stock

Why do you suggest gearing down for the lighter riders? What is the advantage to gearing down?
