Who here has a potato gun?

Himark, I DO remember that. LOL Wasn't there a video to go with that?

Gawd I wish it was video just was pictures of the bar sign up the street and the ammo. hahaha, good times. Now the kids are getting older I keep these stories on the low down round the house.;)

Mine's made out of schedule 40 pvc and a piezo ignitor from an old bbq grill. I've tried dozens of propellants but I keep going back to cheap hairspray - Aquanet seems to work the best but it leaves a sticky residue and it can get hard to open the chamber after a bag of spuds. Actually the anti static clothes spray works best but it's quite a bit more expensive.

Have fun and stay safe!

My chamber is just like that. 4" necked down to a 2" barrell.
What are the sheetrock screws for?

AQUANET is what I used too. LMFAO.

Position them so that the ends are about 1/4 inch apart inside the chamber (near the center) then wire the ignitor leads to them.
Here's a pic I found on the web:

Ohhhhhhhh. Wow. That would be better spark than what I used. I just used an old brass twist style lanter lighter.

funny story for yah, first time I made one I did the plastic up and put the igniter in it that you spin and it sparks off the flint. Well when it was all done I asked the guy with me if he could see the igniter sparking? I held it up and he looked down the barrel as I sparked it. Well enough glue fumes were in there to bark out a nice fire ball and singe his eye brow.... Once I figure he was OK I LOL for a long time. So that should be in the directions under "what redneck things NOT to do":beer;

one of my employees had one. 4" chamber and a 1.5" barrel about 5' long. worked great until we ran out of hairspray, then ran out of ether. oxy-ecetelene was a little too much.:eek: we ended up with one broken hand and several bruised ribs with pvc schrapnel everywhere, and the potatoe never left the barrel.:beer;

had one when I was younger.. Found a good trick is to take a file to the inside edge of the end of your barrel. Makes your potato pack in tighter and shoot way farther.

We had one detonate on us, luckly only scratches left behind. The next one we made we wraped in gorilla tape figuring that it would stop any shrapnel. It looked cool too. After going through every can in the garage we came across suede protector spray, for whatever reason it burned very clean and kept things ungummed.

If we would have learned things in college physics like “if the barrel of a spud gun is x inches in diameter, x inches long, the chamber is x inches of volume, the coefficient of friction between the barrel and spud are x and the propellant has a btu of x, with the barrel of the gun x inches from the ground at x angle, how far will the potato travel?” and then done the same experiment in lab…I would have aced college physics. Instead we learned dumb chit like “if you have x oz of water at 100 degrees, how many oz of water at 50 degrees would you need to add to bring x oz of water to 85 degrees”

Any one done any experimenting to find the best way to make one? I have always wondered what the best barrel length is and what the best chamber diameter and length is. How about material.....I have only seen PVC used. Anything work better?
