Who Has Wrecked Hard Enough To Give Up Sledding?

I have. Screwed up both my shoulders REAL bad at different times. Actually, just got carted off to the hospital in an ambulance yesterday because I blew my shoulder out real bad while SLEEPING...

I should give it up, but I don't. It just dislocates once a day usually when I ride....

While sleeping????:moon:

I have been riding some 30 years and just bought a new boosted yami. Had two of the worst crashes on the same day.
Dismount up a hill landed with my lower back on a rock trying to not let the sled track over it.
Then hit a decreasing radius turn two fast and put it in the trees. Took out the key and right side of the dash with my leg as I was dismounting at 35-45mph. After 2 end for end flips and 1 twist I landed on the perfectly groomed trail with the sled down in the ditch. Oh yeah, boots were pulled off my feet from the violent flipping. This was the day after christmas. Still slamming the motrin. ouch! 42 and all the family says give it up. I gave up the sprint car, drag car and not about to quit sledding.

I have to sit the year out after 2 back surgerys, its going to be hard because I have 4 foot of fresh powder in my yard and getting deeper by the day, but I will do it to keep the bisness alive and be able to take care of family.

Yup, while sleeping. It's bad when you live 20 miles out of town, and are completely by yourself. Worst part was the over an hour wait for the ambulance, and the fact that they couldn't give me any pain meds because they weren't qualified Paramedics. All they had was N2O... And, they took the really bumpy road to town.... I showed up to the hospital in sweat pants, no shirt, and my Klim jacket... Class act, this guy.

Myself, I haven't had any injuries that have made me want to quit. My boyfriend on the other hand, has more than his fair share of injuries. Broken thumb, heel, shin, crushed L2 vertebrae, broken his right femur 3 times, shattered his wrist joint, 7 concussions, bursted spleen, cracked all his ribs, broken collarbone, and other misc. shoulder injuries. Not all that is from racing/riding..he was in an accident when he was 18 fell asleep at the wheel and was hit head on-in a coma for a couple weeks. He has more scars than anyone I know, good thing chicks dig scars right?? haha. I was with him at the race in 06' when he shattered his wrist joint and spiral fractured his right leg. He was out of work from July-October. He had surgery on his wrist, 10 screws & four plates. I don't know how many pain pills we went through, doctors visits, people telling him he's crazy to want to race or ride again, but in his mind he wants to prove them wrong and do what he loves doing. I guess he has slowed down somewhat, being 26, he is starting to think about getting married and having a family someday. He has about 90% of his wrist movement, a lot farther than the doctors thought-who originally said they wanted to fuse his wrist together. Its taken a good year for him to finally come around and start racing again, its crazy to think of where we started out from. He's made some leaps and bounds that's for sure. I guess a thought has never come in my mind that I'd want him to stop, because you couldn't stop me...I'd rather be doing something I love doing than to just sit around and pout about it. The day you quit moving, is the day you die is how I see it.

Right before the crash at the Staples track, the guy on the black quad got crossed up with him in the air.

Back in the saddle again this year^^

Blew knee out 30 miles from the truck ER visits Orthepedists you name it. A year ago STILL making visits to physical therapists. Rode the crappiest bumpy azz trail yesterday and yeah..took today off..But you never really quit do you....its like crack:D Bet your sled is still in the garage!!!

I won't quit, but MAJOR adjustments in riding

When I was younger, I broke my neck in the snow (not on a sled). Fractured C5 & C7, crushed C6, ended up as a quad. Spent months looking at the ceiling before I started to move again. 2 years in & out of hospitals & surgeries. 5 years ago they gave up on trying to rebuild my neck. Took out 3 vertibrae and put in a titanium cage, 2 bars in the back and bolted it all to a plate in the front. Needless to say, I am happy to ride but ride like an old lady. People who don't know some times tease me for not trying the big stuff but what the heck. My pride isn't that important:). I have a wife & daughter to think of.

IM young and dumb, no bad injuries yet, my friend suffer a bad concusion that could have killed him, he was ready to go the next weekend but his parents made him take a week off so he didnt kill himself.

It is like crack, when your not doing it your thinking about how you are gonna get money and time to do it, and who when and where your going to do it.

First ride of 2003, my wife's brand new 600 RMK steering locked up on a right turn. Straight ahead she went, over the edge of the trail, down through the trees and into the creek. She hurt her shoulder and back and was out for a few weeks. She has never forgot the feeling of WTF do I do now? She was a good little rider and really enjoyed getting out. Hasn't gone for four years. Damn you Polaris!

I quit racing sleds because of injuries. I raced snocross for four years but my last year racing I was getting hurt every weekend and the only way I could sit through school on mondays was to load up on pain killers. The season ended due to a destroyed shoulder that took a couple surgeries to get it semi-right. I still ride the mountains a couple times a week and don't think I could ever give that up.

Doesn't rank up there with some of you guys, but managed to find a small tree in the deep powder on my XLT yesterday. Grabbed the brakes, coasted into it, but the right ski found the wrong side of the tree and as I lurched forward, the right handlebar found my groin. Sporting a beautiful black and blue bruise at the moment. Fortunately nothing was bent on the sled and I was able to ride out.

I also have had my neck fused and discs removed and spine fused in my lower back.
On top of the fact that I'm getting a little older and it takes longer to recouperate from a good ride!
I can ride all day unless I'm digging myself or riding buddies out a lot, then it becomes a short day for me.

It takes guts to ride with all that hardware in your neck there Gooser. Kudos to ya. And you are right about the more important things in life.

I love to ride sleds and I hope to be able to keep dooing it for years to come but I guess when I'm still sore on Saturday from the ride LAST Saturday then it's time to slow down a bit.

Ad Rev, Thanks for the words. I know what you mean about being sore. Rode hard yesterday with some guys I met on this forum. I spent most of my day watching them or digging out my sled and DANG, I am sore today:D Getting old sucks!

I am just too dam good on my sled to get hurt, the closest to getting injured was when I sh** myself (seriously) comming down a nasty shute with a bad drop near the bottom. I had a brutal a** rash for a week.

In '99 went off a planned drop hit my handle bars broke two ribs, puntured both lungs, bruised heart and cracked sternum. In the hospital my heart stopped(no white light,no pretty girls with harps, just darkness) EVERY day is a gift and I ride every chance i get, just got back from Revy 4-5 feet of pow:D:D

May your injuries only make you ride harder! I.E. Both shoulders dislocated, one knee torn and healed, L2 and L3 vertibre compressed and fractured, 5 sleds lots of money many memories and a hell of alot of fun.... Keep it up until you cant keep it up....

Last year (march 06) I broke my leg due to icy conditions while sledding, compound tib/fib fracture. I was in bed for 6 weeks and out of work for 7 months. Doc recommended I quit sledding, and said he doubted that I would ever hike again, much less with a load.
I started riding again towards the end of last season, though it was toned down.
This year I packed my elk out on my back, and I fully expect to be able to ride all season this year.

Why on earth were you out of work for 7 months? What type of work do you do?

I broke my Femur into 3 pieces. most pain I have even been in my life, and was back at it in a month and a half. had my back fuzed and back at it in a couple months. shattered both my heals and was back at it in a couple. many more injures and none took over 2 months..

That just sounds rediculous to me.

As far as my input on injuries and riding go.. I have broken many many bones racing motocross as well as had 3 back surgeries from incidents racing stand up jet skis. I have found sledding to be the most tollerable on my body, but I still ride MX and ride Standups, just cant compete like i did. I have wrecked a sled going 100 mph, having the ski catch some ice on a trail and throwing me over 150 ft and that didnt faze me, so I would have to guess it would have to be something more serious like an avy or something. man I hope that never happens..

I would say most injuries while doing motorized sports, just make me think back at what the heck I did wrong, and how not to let that happen next time.

my wife turned out to the right when she should have gone left:eek: and got airlifted out with "no feeling below her waist and strange abdominal gurgling". She turned out allright, but after that, she slowed down, and after 4 kids, she totally quit; she said "she wanted to be around to raise her kids".

That is a noble cause, but I sure miss a good rid'n partner...

I gave up mx for sledding after a series of bad events and yes ive toned it down several notches you just need to know when to say when although it
always crosses in my mind hell yes i can do it!!!! Then i think hey stupid!:)
