Whistler Says No To Snowmobiles At Winter X Games 2013

The Whistler Olympic Park in Callaghan Valley, which was being eyeballed as a potential site for the snowmobiling events, is zoned as a non-motorized area and there are many in Whistler that would like to keep it that way.

Wonder why it was even up for consideration if its "zoned a no motorized area".
Im sure Whistler the ski hill can find another place to host the snowmobiling part. Im sure Squamish or Pemberton could easily fill the gap.

The Callaghan used to be one of our favorite places to ride...until the Olympic planners came. During the early negotiations it was supposed to be a temporary closure until the Olympics were over but the greenies got it closed permanently. This is why it's important for everyone to join your local snowmobile club and get involved! You get a couple Greenies in Whistler saying it's "not the Whistler way" and all of a sudden every ehole from Vancouver jumps on the bandwagon. I'm sorry...but it IS the Whistler way! 1/3 of the trucks in Whistler have a sled hanging out of the back of it.

I don't want to hear anyone who drives a combustible vehicle, flys on jets, skis at Whistler Blackcomb, goes Cat skiing or heli skiing complain about the carbon footprint of my Yamaha Nytros in the backcountry. When you are self sufficient, live off the land and don't rely on anything that needs a fossil fuel burning product to produce it....I might give your comments some credit. But until then...your comments have no merit hypocrite.

Nads- can you please give me any information you may ave on Al? I am preparing a resonse to his letter to the editor in the Whistler Pique and I plan on making sure everyone sees how much of a hypocrite he is.

Does anyone have stats on emissions from sleds, vehicles, jets, snowcats, etc?

Thanks!

the peaple that promote the ex games need to say no sled's no games

Taylor says ESPN won’t approve Whistler without a snowmobiling component. And he noted that organizers would only be looking for a short-term, six-day permit to operate at WOP.
“The other thing is that it is a small, invitational field, maybe 10 riders, so the carbon impact is incredibly small. It’s not like there’s going to be a massive outing of people and snowmobiles buzzing around. It’s a very contained venue.”
ESPN officials will be in Whistler March 1-2 for a site visit, with a final decision expected in April.

At one time I had stats as to how many gallons of fuel is burned by a 747 per mile, but I don't know where I stashed that little gem. The Air Transportation Authority does keep stats on total fuel use by airlines in the US per year, and the number is staggering.

Here is a link to a SAWS editorial I wrote in the fall of 2008. Much of it does not apply to this proposed action in Whistler, but some is very relevant.

Good luck,

Dave

A portion of my editorial that may be of interest:

"A 2006 article in USA Today titled Concern Grows Over Pollution From Jets states “Aircraft emissions pollute the air and threaten by 2050 to become one of the largest contributors to global warming”. The article also states “scientists studying global warming are most concerned about pollutants emitted when a plane is airborne. Jets are the major source of emissions deposited into the upper atmosphere, where some pollutants have a greater warming effect than when they are released in the same amount from the ground…” Several so-called environmentalists and some extreme environmental groups have even suggested that people that use air travel to get to their vacation destinations for pleasure, are no friend of the environment for unnecessarily increasing their “carbon footprint” on this planet for selfish pleasure purposes. "

The guy who was directly responsible for closing the Callaghan Valley to snowmobiling was George MacKay, when he worked for VANOC. George was/is ironically also one the principles beyond pushing the Brohm Ridge development and is the one that has been behind trying to shut snowmobiling out of there as well.

Of course the envirotards have supported these decisions and turned a blind eye to their "carbon footprint" when the Olympic Nordic center was constructed.

In the past, snowmobilers used the area with little to no impact. The construction of the nordic ski center had thousands of old growth trees cut down, pristine vegetation destroyed, roads built and over a million tons of rock blasted for the construction of their roads and trails- a tragic sight around Madley Lake, and have re-route snowmobilers access to the high-country into dangerous avalanche terrain.

They should be forced to answer these questions before any further decision are made with regards to snowmobiles in the corridor;

How many BTUs of carbon energy were used to build the Callaghan Nordic center? Have they done a carbon audit on the project?

How old growth trees were cut?

How many explosives were used in blasting? And what impact did that have on surrounding wildlife?

How much pavement was used to pave the Callaghan Valley Rd? 13 km- 2 lanes and parking lots.

What effects have the total construction project had on wildlife in the valley?

What other societal costs were incurred during the construction project? -at least one death from a blasting accident.

I would imagine criticism might shift elsewhere if these questions were honestly answered.

The fact is that its not us acting irresponsibly, its them. We need to show up the land use meetings and embarase them so badly that leave with their tails between their legs. These people are complete hypocrites that would like nothing more than to shutdown our economy- nothing but traitors to our bill of rights.

Dont sweat it, one guy writes a letter to the paper and anyone actually think the X-games will go away? How much money would the x-games bring to the valley? There are plenty of places they can hold the sled events, hopefully they wont be in Callahagn so I can have a few beers watching the events and dont have to drive back to Whistler on the highway.

This is all about one angry old man writing a letter to the paper because he has nothing better to do and his ski outfit is too tight. They have their happy little place out there where they can watch eachother skate around their flat little trails in their cute tight outfits with logos from some country they have never heard of. Let em have it, since they got their taxpayer funded money hemmoraging little fashon show in Callahagn I havnt heard of any hippie pressure on any other spots around here, seems to be an alright arrangement so far...

Summer X is all about motors now days and there trying to kill motors in winter X it just comes down to $$$$$. it’s like they look at a dude doing a front flip on sled or try’s a double back flip, jump a sled 412 feet that’s another day. But if someone can spin 4 times in a half pipe it’s the most amazing thing that has ever happened. We need to all send letter to the head of the xgames with the way social media is now we can over load them with emails.
Where is Joe Duncan at? i bet he knows the right ppl to send emails to.

So does this mean that all the snowboarders and skiers that use the sleds to give them a ride back to the top of the halfpipe are going to have to walk now? The X Games cannot exist in its current form without snowmobiles to support all their different events. At most of the vert and halfpipe stuff there are 5-6 snowmobiles making roundtrips constantly to get the athletes back to the top of the hill. So either someone is going to have to be hugely hypocritical and allow snowmobiles for support only, or the X games will have to grow some balls and say sleds are in or we're out of here.

These people that think they are so high and mighty and all 'green' piss me off.

The Telus Ski and Snowboard World Festival currently uses sleds on the mountain to tow riders back to the top during Big Air events and Finals.
The resort uses sleds to maintain lifts and operate daily.
Canadian Snowmobile Adventures rents sleds on the mountain once the lifts close for a trail ride to the Roundhouse for a foundue dinner. (sounds gay)

There are lots of sleds in use on Whistler /Blackcomb daily.....all for Profit ;)

Safe sledin'
RS

That sucks! It's not fair that all these decisions are made before we even get a say in the matter. That's what happens with 90% of the closures out there. We never here about any of it. By the time we do it's too late to speak up.

damn good points RS, and thanks for the fondue chuckle!!!!!
thats definitly a fonDONT if ya ask me!!!

Jet travel pollution??

Here's what most people miss. A Boeing 747 burns roughly 6.5 gallons per mile. Thats right I said GALLONS per mile. A 747 holds an average of 400 passengers. So simple math shows that by traveling on a 747 each passenger is getting the equivalent of 40.5 miles per gallon.

I also didn't watch the Winter X games this year since there was no snowmobile racing.

I with you all, and I could go on and on also.. But this is what come to mind when they say no snowmobiles at the X games, (money lost). How will the attendance be? How will the t.v. veiws turn out? If they don't end up doing it, I hope it will hit there pocket!!!

I was thinking the same thing.

Skis are made from plastic
Ski boots are made from plastic
Ski ski goggles and ski helmets are made from plastic
Ski hats, ski gloves, and ski clothes are made from synthetic fibers which are...you guessed it, plastic.

Know what plastic is made from?

So every time a Hippy-crit upgrades their gear an oil executive gets a bonus.

This is about the liberals who run this particular venue not wanting to promote snowmobiling.

After some bad news around here recently, looks like there might be some good news for the x-games in Whistler. It's being reported that organizers have decided to hold the snowmobile component of the games on Whistler Mountain at the tube park. Even better if you ask me, keeping everything close to the village. Bring it on!
