Whining RMK

Rode my 02 800RMK vert. edge for the first time a couple weeks ago and it seemed really noisy (compared to other sleds I have). Whining noise from clutch? Gear case? What should I look for? Ran perfect with no problems - maybe this is normal? (I did a full lube job and changed gear oil before the ride.)

Whinning

What kind of oil did you put in the chain case? I put conventional oil in one a while back and it whinned. Went back to synthetic chain case oil and it quieted down.

I had the same issue with an 03 700. Over the summer, I replaced all the bearings in the suspension and drive shaft. Also did both clutches, and replaced chain and sprockets.
First ride out and there was a whine between 25-40mph. It wasn't there the season before, so it had to be something I changed. Took everything apart again but could find nothing wrong. To me it sounded like the chain case, but really hard to pin point. At one point I was going to put the old gear set back in and see what happened, but never got around to it. Rode it like that for 600 miles without a problem.
I read that the metal roller on the tensioner can make a lot of noise.......?

If you aren't used to Polaris, their brakes whine a lot loader than the other brands. Betting its just the brakes.

Do you have mechanical reverse? I had 2 sleds with the mechanical reverse and both had a loud whine from the chaincase. It didn't cause any abnormal wear on the gears or chain though.

I used ATF (dextron). I use it on all my sleds and never had a problem. I'll try gear oil, but its pretty thick in cold temps.
No reverse on this sled.

I will have to say the first time I rode my 02 800 rmk I heard that whining sound you are talking about. My buddy has the same sled and it sounds the same, sounds like gears meshing in a transmission or something like that,I think its normal for this sled.

At 3000 miles, the bogey wheel bearing all need to be replaced, especially the rear bogey wheels. If you are not burning up any oil then your crankshaft bearings are already on the way out. This can be confirmed by a slow throttle response. You might grab your drive clutch and try to wiggle it. If it wiggles then your PTO bearings are shot. Drive shaft bearings also need replacement about this time as well.

I have had that same whine for several years coming from chaincase. No big deal. Every edge I have ever rode has that whine. At one time I found a bulletin or something that talked about a certain gear combo that was quieter than most but dont remember where.
