Which is the best tire? Studded or non studded snow tire?

For towing purposes in Ice, packed snow, and slush conditions only which tire is best over all? Studded or high end non studded snow tire? Used on highways only and not concerned about wear issues. I just want the best traction.

there is already a thread going on this..but with that said...mine........

now for the best you can buy..best performer I have seen in direct competition with known top tires(in a online reveiw by a magazine) for best traction in both snow and ice, carring a extreme winter tire rating is the general Alti arctic tires..they were tops......

Talking to a tire expert who went to tire school or 8 years who's cousin's friend read on the internet that it may be best to put the air on the inside & the studs on the outside of the tire.

Probably just internet bullshet though.

LOL...I learned this from our local Police..its how they used to do their tires...till the greenies complained about 10-15 yrs ago.. not uncommon for us to have roads that look like someone took a zambonie down them.....used to do 40-100 sets a winter for my customers..cant anymore..just kills the wrist, elbow and shoulder...

So in simple terms will a studded tire grip better then a non studded winter tire? Seems like I'm getting more confused as I research more on the internet. A lot of studies that have been done were not performed with towing.

all depends on the tire...as in width/height/construction/tread/compounds and such..but with that said..yes studs will add traction to the same tire without studs.

they have been on the truck for over 20,000 miles now..they do work great..cant stand sliding around..been studding my own tires for over 25 yrs now....

Just curious did you ever run just a non studded winter tire before studs? I really like the Bridgestone Blizzaks for my Tahoe. But if Studs are far superior then I'll look for a studded version for my SUV.

From my experience the Wintercat sst is the top studded tire available in Oregon.

Have you used the wintercat before? I was looking at that tire at the tire shop and it didn't look like it was very soft and didn't have much sipping. From what I've heard from a lot of people is that its a A/T that they put studs on.

What I would really like is the best of both worlds and get a great all around snow tire along with the studs. But the more research I do I found that the Blizzaks are where I'm leaning. Be great if they made those stud compatible.

Check out Nokian, Hakkapelitta LT Studable. I run them on a Silverado. I don't even bother getting them studded. Studs are great if you get a lot of ice but mostly we get snow packed roads at 9k-10k feet where I live. They are the best snow tire I have ever had. I only run them in the winter.

Firestone winterforce are a true winter that's studdable. Nokians would be nice too and a softer compound than the Firestones if that's what you're looking for.

Studded Nokians would be hard to beat....pricey, but they have tons of grip. Can only get from Kal Tire.

Like AK mentioned, a lot of this has been gone over in the other thread, but I'll chime in on this thread. I went with the Firestone Winterforce with studs. They are a true winter tire and were also $300-350 cheaper than Duratracs with free studding.

These are LT265-70R17 E load(10 ply):

Thanks guys this really help me decide on which is better for my application. I think I'm going to try the studdless tires this year and go with a really good quality snow tire. If I find I'm still slipping around then I guess I'll try some studded tires next year.

Yes, i've tried many and now I run the wintercats. I live on a driveway that gains 200 vertical feet and the wintercats are the only way my wife can make it up with her little subaru impreza. Mine are on a tacoma, very predictable and work well on ice too. I hate Les Schwab but they have a good tire.

I ended up going with the Blizzaks. All the research I did showed that a really good studdless could out perform the studs in all conditions. I talked to several people to towed with the blizzaks after having studs previous and they said they would never go back. Never owned either so this will be all new ground for me. Les Schwab prices suck but you can't beat there customomer service.

yep...have driven tons of vehicles, with and without studs...still think the best winter tire out there with no studs or stock studs are general altimax arctic.. they just flat out work on snow and ice..wear good, drive niceand arnt break the bank spendy...And if I didnt stud my own..these are the tires I would run.........
