Which helmet of these 3?

Lookin' for a new lid this year. With weight and ventilation being my primary concerns, aside from protection, which of these 3 would be the best combination of protection, weight, ventilation and price?

Bell Moto 8 $200ish

Fly Racing Trophy $140ish

One Industries Trooper $150ish

The bell is going to be hands down the best ventilated of the 3. Also, it is a very comfortable helmet. Safety will be similar across the board. Although, I know bell does alot of independent testing on their stuff. They have a sectional eps liner that is supposed disperse impact better.
Just some thoughts for you.

Have you tried the bell on? Certain heads don't like the bell layout. My forehead hangs out of the bell far enough that it could come into contact with the ground with the right impact. I wear a shoei v moto now and its hands down the nicest lid I've ever had. I feel much more secure in it than my old moto 7R. I think the V moto is cheaper than that moto 8 as well. There's a higher ranged version of the v-moto as well that has way more vents, I think essentially they are the same lid though. Where did you find that tag on the moto 8? last I saw they were $350 @ rockymtnmotocross.com. My V-moto was like 305.

Could you give me a little more info as to why the helmets listed above do not offer adequate protection?

.

I have the fly trophy helmet and it kicks butt. Its pretty light for a cheaper helmet and it fits my head oh soo nice. The one industries helmet feels like a walmart helmet when its on your head but thats just my .02

5 stars??

I wouldn't put much trust in the ratings. I think Graveler wears one of those rainbow colored helmets and it couldn't have done him much good. From reading some of his posts, he obviously has brain damage.:)

Aria is the only one with a 5 star rating,

2 things...

1. Where do I find the list of helmet ratings?

and...

B. Did you happen to read the article that was posted on here a while back about how some of the higher end helmets are actually over-built for some of the lower speed motorsports? They can actually cause more damage to the brain because they're built to withstand a high speed impact. If the shell is too rigid it will not shatter from a low speed impact and thereby transfers more impact to your melon. I'll see if I can find the post.

I'm sure for what we're doing you're gonna want a snell m-2000 or better. That bell has the highest ratings, as do the arai and shoeis.not sure about the one industries, although I think its in there as well. People with big noses generally don't fit the arais, and big chins/foreheads don't like the bells. Have you read Swaps articles in TWMX in recent months? He tried to move a loader tire with his head at 40mph a few months ago and gives his lid and leatte brace the cred for his being able to walk and talk today. These guys also did a review on a cheaper $150 helmet and failed it when they were able to break the jaw bar off with their bare hands. If I could afford it, and if I didn't have the big beak, an arai would be around my head. At up to $530 they are really spendy though too. My top three choices are the Arai, Shoei and Bell, I wouldn't buy a lesser helmet than any of these, and I've been on life support due to motocross related injuries, so take it from me. And sledding is just as dangerous.
Oh yeah shoeis web site has links to the snell foundation website, they list all of their ratings on there. Snell is the one to go by. DOT ratings mean little to nothing, they don't actually test the helmets for safety.

Exactly. Sounds like Graveler needs to read up on SNELL ratings. They are a marketing tool just as much as they are a safety rating.

heh, yeah.... try 'em on before you buy one.

Dunno about you, but I'll shell out some $$ to get a decent helmet. I paid about $250 for my HJC, and it was one of the cheapest ones I considered. Arai makes nice helmets, but they'd fit my head a lot better if my ears were 2" closer to my chin...

Yes, be careful in choosing your lid. The article was concerning the differences between ECE and Snell. Arai even admits that they have to produce a different helmet for overseas as the Eupopean market will not accept Snell as a safe standard. Arai did very poorly in some independent testing. Most of the force impacted on the shell was transfered directly to your noggin. Snell helmets perform better at extremely unrealistic speeds (over 100) and assume you will be impaling yourself on a very sharp object. Snell has been getting beat up pretty bad lately as being overly ridged and not obsorbing impact as a helmet should. The new Thor helmets have actually dropped Snell this year and gone with ECE.
I have also heard that the new Snell 2010 rating will also be ECE complacent. INTERESTING!!!!

This is exactly the type of feedback I was looking for. Do you think the Bell will be too rigid? Does the Bell fit like the Klim helmets? I need to find a place nearby and try some on. I've tried the Klim and I couldn't get comfortable no matter what size.
