Where to ride ATV's?

So, the wife and I want to take a trip with our A.T.V (2wd sport atv’s Honda EX 400 and 450). I am look for a place to stay at or with-in 10 min’s to the trail head. We want to go near June 20th or so and stay for 3 to 4 days. I was going to go to Snowy Rang WY (Snowies) but I spoke with Chris @ Mountain Meadow Lodge and he said there is still a lot of snow up top and none of the trails will be open then.
Any ideas where to go? I would like to say with-in a 4 hr drive from Denver
Links would be great!
Thanks in advance!!

A few years ago I went to the snowies around june 21. snotel was showing no snow but everything north of 130 was drifted shut. no surprise now, esp with snotel still showing lots of snow up there.

buena vista area or over the mtn by taylor park, many trails, can purchase fall color tour trail book in buena vista visitor center

rampart range is supposed to be good, though ive never been there

red cliff, camp hale area are good for a few days, though somewhat limited on trails and mcallister gulch trail is pretty rough/technical for newbies but can be ridden on a 250ex with proper caution.

red feather lakes area is supposed to be good, though ive never been there either,

Like the snowies, i'd be concerned about any roads over 9,000 ft being snowed in so check with locals or google for jeep club reports as they post trail conditions too since they are trying to get up there as well.

I too am looking for riding and camping areas in colorado so if anyone has any other ideas or info that would be great.

I'd suggest the ride up to Teal Lake a tad north of Buff Pass but I think that there is still a healthy amount of snow up there. I did that trip with Yammerhammer last July and there was still 3' of snow in the trees. Very good ride with some pretty technical rock crawling and then you can always do some muddin on the trail at the bottom. You can stay at the North Park Inn and drive to the trails. I think it is 15 minutes from Walden.

If you are interested, PM Yammerhammer and ask him. He is more of an expert than I am as he spends a fair amount of time there in the summer and hunting season. Hope that I could help.

+1 for Rampart, lots of ATV trails out there, lots of camping areas out there too.

1. Yes, it is from Rampart, 690 near flat rocks CG. A lot of the trails are like that. The trails along the road get whooped out in spots, but they're not bad.

2. It's been my desktop pic at work since the day after I took it (27 May 09). :)

3. Trail maps are available at "Jarre Mart", on your left off 67 in sedalia. , prints nicely on 8.5x11, pockets easily and not as unwieldy as the 13x22" one they sell. National Geographic has a decent topo of the area that includes the major trail #s.

Thanks for the great ideas! I should have said I do not have a camper so I am looking for a place to stay at or near the trails.

Rampart is a great place but I have been there at lease 1,000 + times over the last 10 years so I was looking for something new.

It looks like there are some good places near Grand Junction

Mule, thanks for the great map!

Is there good mtn scenery in this range or are the trails pretty much in the trees a lot?

Can anyone recommend a camping spot for a self-contained trailer tow toy hauler? - we would like to be close to a small stream if possible so the dog can have a little R & R too. We would be there during the week.

Grand Mesa has some great ATV trails, and you can camp, or stay at a couple different lodges.

Yammer - nice pics - are those pics from the Rampart trails?
nice pics x2

Aqua Fria is a nice little ride with some great views of North Park. And it is usually cool even in the middle of summer.

The northern section of the Grizzly/ Helena is a decent ATV trail and added to a day at the North Sand Hills would make for a fun weekend.

The North Park Inn is right in the middle of both.
The trails around Grand Lake might be open by then too. Fairly big system of ATV trails right out of town.

is there any 4 wheeler trail maps available for the buff pass area similar to the orv map wyoming has? we will be in walden first week of august.

To confirm the above about the Snowy's - even the trails down 'low' near Rob Roy still have snow as of last weekend. My parents said they had 3-4' drifts going into their place and they had to walk the last 1/4 mile in and get the snowcat to clear a path back out for the 4 wheeler. The elk and moose were having no problems getting around though :)

Give the Snowy's at least another week or 10 days to ride out of Albany IMO.
