Where to buy hardwood flooring

Anyone know where to get a good deal on hardwood. I take possession of my new house in a week and it needs about 1200 sq/ft of flooring replaced. I need to come down to Montana next week to pick up my dirtbike so if its cheaper in the states that is an option too.

My dad has a floor coverings business down in Sioux Falls. Not sure if it would be feasible to ship or not but you can look at his site to get some idea's on what brands, colors, style, etc... might interest you.

Where in MT? I bought mine at The Carpet Garage in Billings. They had it from $1+/square ft to over $5/square ft. We paid like $2.25-$2.50/sq ft for some pretty decent stuff. Actually looked very nice and was easy to install. And was cheaper than the "big box stores".

If you can, take a cupboard door w/ you to match up the flooring (there are many, many shades). (if you're flooring the kitchen, that is)

Another hardwood flooring question: Any tips to taking care of it? My new house has hardwood flooring throughout and I'm not sure what I need to know about it. Thanks.

I just got dome nailing in 700 sq ft of flooring that I bought at Menards for 2100.00. It is called Hickory Cider. Prefinished with a ten yr warranty. Looks great.....I would recommend.

If you've got dogs, don't buy the cheap bamboo. The cheaper it is, the younger and softer it is and my two labs are starting to give mine the hand scraped look.

I found a flooring auction that looks like it has quite a few lots around the size that I need. Hopefully there is some nice looking stuff. Any idea as to what to look for as far as quality? How do you tell a 3 dollar hardwood from an 8 dollar one??

Buckeye Hardwood in Arlee MT. Arlee is just north of Missoula.

Hank is owners name.

I just did about 280 sq ft for $600.

I bought bowling alley lanes.

Price out new flooring for that area and came up with $2600.

I got Brazillian cherry/Brazillian breau(pron. "brew") out of hardwood pallets for free:p had it t&g'ed for $.80 a lin ft- life is good!! it is some of the most amazing wood I have ever seen; hard as a rock and colors like you wouldn't believe.

I still need to install it; building your own house in your spare time is a pain.

Deaner, Talk to Terry at Titan Flooring.
he is a sledder, if you want quality, he has the stuff. Tell him I sent you.
If you drive up 99 st, there are a LOT of places to purchase prefinished flooring.

One thing to look for is the type of finish, a UV cured finish (like Mirage) will be worth it in the long run. If you go engineered, or solid, stay away from maple, unless you have good constant humidity control. The warranties usually reflect quality. try to avoid a stained product, you can see if it is stained from the backside, or the edges on engineered. Stained will show, and is a biotch to repair.

Try Windsor Plywood. I found they have a great selection, from teak to cork.
Timbertown has even a better selection.

If you go photofinish, (laminate) make sure it has a heavy paper, take your thumbnail on the edge,or corner... if it chips easily, you will know if it will last or not.. Most laminates will degrade your house value, if it is a decent property. Engineered is still better, and some can be just as good of quality as a hardwood, in some ways.

Actually I think Costco might be a good place to look.. most are engineered, bit some are solid. The sapele looks good, and the cost is comparable..
