Where is there snow in the West?

Alaska

Had had some excellent snow fall and riding this last weekend at Summit/Paxson area. Might be a lttle further west than you were looking for. Fred

On that note.

We have a trip for January 28th and kinda scratching our heads also. Heading out from Iowa. Based on snow alone, your thoughts:

Rabbit Ears?
Grand Mesa?

Snowys?
Togwotee?

From what Im reading RE has the best snow, but small area and looking at 2 weeks of no new snow. Tracked out? Grand Mesa a bit further but willing to drive it. Less snow but more acreage so better chance of fresh?

Havent heard/read much about Snowys so that worries me. Thread on Togwotee makes conditions sound so/so.

Canada is outta the question, 3 in our group I don't believe any would be let into the country.

Ride meadows and tend to head into the trees to humble ourselves.

Thanks for your honest opinions.

West Yellowstone and north of there has been good riding but need some more snow. If you ride SW Montana or the area around Island Park Idaho stay out of the steep, avalanches have been big and bad this year be prepared.

Any suggestions for the best snow within a 5 hour radius of Sun Valley, ID? At least something to ride on. Coming from Northern California and we have zero snow.
We are looking to just do a day trip. We will be there all week (trip planned long ago).

thanks

Currently the best snow is around Cooke city, Togwotee, and RE or Steamboat Springs CO. If I had my choice of trips next weekend I would definitely go to Steamboat Springs, storms coming in will hit them pretty good first (by Jan 29th or so) they have had more powder days this winter then anywhere else in lower 48.

Snow in WA

Last weeks ride was great. It's not so bad here in Washington if your willing to get into the higher elevations. We were some of the only tracks on this hill.

I agree with this guy! It looks like Rabbit's Ear Pass just received 14" of new snow with more on the way. It's a long haul from Fallon: 13hrs and 830 miles.

Bis snowstorm dumps 36"+ of fresh powder Great snow near Rabbit Ears Pass in NW CO

I saw your post about snowmobiling out west so I thought you might be interested in this. It might be a little late for your trip but who knows. We may even be available for a few days during your trip so if you are near Rabbit Ears Pass/Steamboat Springs, CO and decide there are too many people snowmobiling and cannot find fresh powder-call me. We do not get much traffic our way.

Also, I am making two donations of 4 day snowmobiling trip at our secluded ride in/out cabin in NW CO 1 hr from Rabbit Ears Pass. One donation is tomorrow in Iowa (see below) the other will be April 12th in Hinckley, MN at the casino. I will be at the Hinckley show if you want to meet me in person, but if you want to schedule a trip this year you should bid on the Iowa donation listed below. Call me if you have any questions- Lisa 970.926.0216.

For anyone looking for the best powder this year in Colorado-bar none it is NW CO. I have made a donation to the Iowa Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (see info below) of a 4 day trip for up to four people to my ride in/out snowmobile cabin in NW CO 1 hour from Rabbit Ears Pass. More people or nights can be added for additional fee paid to me not the charity.
The banquet is Feb 1st and the item will go on sale shortly after 8pm Central time. I do not think you have to attend the event to bid-you may be able to call AJ and ask to phone bid on the item. I am attaching a youtube video that shows the snowmobiling and the cabin.

Moved down to Togwatee and rode the Valleys the 26th and the 27th and found good riding but had look hard for it. Was snowing when we left on thursday (of course) We have as much snow on the ground in the UP and more fresh.

Hey,
We were at Gallagher. Tried another lower elevation ride at Gold Creek, but gave up turned around and reloaded. It was worth it. Pretty good coverage once we hit 6,000 ft it was great. Approx. two day old untouched and 10" or so of new snow that had stayed cold.

49 degrees below zero at my buddies house just north of cooke city probably 100 miles so I wouldn't get too excited yet.

I saw -37 on the weather I'm cooke this morning. Can you say surface hoar
