Where is the best riding?????

If you want Steep and Deep DON'T go the southern Horns, you mite find deep, but you won't find steep. The snowies are an awesome place to ride, and they have steep.

Thats a very irrresponsible suggestion for a guy with a wife and family looking for a fun trip. Lionshead is very extreme, lots of deep canyons, off canter riding and is one of the most Avalanche prone areas in the West. ESPECIALLY back into Sheep mtn!

You sir, are a moron for suggesting this.

Early 200? I sat on top of lionshead over expo weekend and could see
12 slides that were fresh that day by turning in a circle. I watched a natural slide in front of my eyes while picking my line.

I've had the family there a few times and there is very little to do for the novice riders. It is a beautiful sight seeing ride but I doubt I'll ever joy ride it again.

SC69'er: LaGrande to HalfWay, OR = 94 miles..........Not much of a road trip for you, but I have friends that go and say it's better than McCall. Before I commit to going this year, can I get your thoughts?

He asked some opinions in steep and deep. He even asked about cooke. I would believe cooke is just as or more prone to avys. You can make snowmobiling as dangerous or as safe as you want. Again he said he wanted steep and deep. Do you know what goes along with steep and deep? LIke I said It was just my opinion. Call me a moron if you wish, was just trying to help a fellow snowester. Obviously you don't know what an opinion is!

Oh ya. I forgot to mention that Lionshead is outside of West Yellowstone which is probably the best place to take the family and kids for a winter destination. Idaho, YOu should read and think before you type!

On a Serious Note, IP is good, Im going to agree with slim though, Lionshead is right up there with MT Jefferson IMO as not places for Family types rides. Great Riding back there but not for pieps that aren't on their A Game when it comes to safety, and knowing the AVY conditions.

That is the same reason I wouldn't recomend AFTON or ALPINE, Those are areas that kill even Advanced riders every year. Not so much family type spots.

Try and keep the name calling to a min guys. The mods don't like to work and naming calling causes a rucus everytime it starts.

I usually dont like to get into these pissing matches, but hussey, you are wrong

The first thing that caught my eye is your from MN. I dont have a problem with any of you from there, BUT there are alot of you that think you know this country out west better than we know it ourselves. WELL YOU DONT... You dont know squat about anything out here except what is said right here on this forum.

FYI---Slim is one of the MOST avalanche and safety orientated guys I know. He cares about people not getting hurt and even killed when they ride this country. There are weekends when climbing is OFF LIMITS in our group and then there are weekends that you go ballz out.

LOL, I think what he is trying to point out, is there are some great places to ride in IP, Alpine, Afton, ( most of the popular places) but most of the stellar places also are areas that you can get yourself into trouble in a hurry if your not careful.

There are alot of locals in these areas that see some one that isn't from out here make a suggestion for a spot, this case Sheep Mtn, and they get fired up at the suggestion since they know how nasty those places can be. So as a local when they give suggestions its going to be for the safer selections. Due to the desire to keep people safe, cause lets be honest no one wants to hear about people getting caught in slides.

A good example is a big group of us are getting together in Feb, we planned it last spring and we tossed around McCall, IP, and for a bit I pushed for Alpine knowing how good it can be. More I thought about it, I let Alpine die cause I know how bad it can be and with guys driving 20+ hours to go some place I didn't want them to show up and not be able to ride the good stuff cause the AVY conditions are threw the roof.

Ip Would be a good place to take the Fam, I just wouldn't be taking them into some of the bigger spots.

I'm not here for a pissing match. He asked where would be a good place for the steep and deep and family. I would never want anyone to get hurt or killed. I thought that West would be great for the family with all the trails and other activities you can do while if daddy and friends wanted steep and deep they had other places to go with more of a challenge. I did not mean for him to take his kids on to difficult terrain.

OK, fair enough then, but please dont come on here and tell people that live out here and that spend months in the mountains each year that they dont know anything. Some of these places are no joke and take lives EVERY year.

Hope you all have great trips out west this year and please be safe. It WILL be another bad avy year. We already have the ice layer and its NOT GOING AWAY.

Hussey, OK, I spose I was a tad rude with the moron comment, I even went in this morning and tried to edit that, but dog gone if Hobb-Z had ta go and already quote it! So its actaully HIS fault for the sh!tdisturbing :D......

Anyhoos, the others that have chimed in here have put it more political correctly, that it was a very poor suggestion for a non-knowing / non-local who does not know of the history of it's conditions, nor has never ridden there. I have, MANY times since it is about 55 miles from my home.

Let me say this mo betta ....... Lionshead is a "Advanced Rider Only" area, not a family ride in any sense of the suggestion, no groomed trails, no flat areas, pure & simple EXTREME mountain riding with high Avy danger ALWAYS. I ought to know, I pulled a chute one day about 10 years ago for some tourists as a show. The next day that very chute caught 2 advanced riders, killing one, I went to the recovery site the next day, and sat on his snowy grave after they removed him, contemplating that it could have been me.

I think I have earned the right to point out errors in my own back yard that could get people in danger, or dead.

Safe riding to you all.

A great place for the family, I beleive would be Union Pass just outside Dubois here in Wy. The Line shack is a great place to stay and the trails out of there are always well marked and groomed.
For the steep and deep you could go just a few miles further up the hwy and stay at the Lava Mnt. Lodge. They are close to the steep and deep and half the price of Togwotee.
Have a great time!!
cheers:beer;

I have heard that there is some really good riding out of Halfway as well. I rode McCall quite a bit last season and its good riding but I am always looking for new terrain. Any info on riding out of Halfway would be appreciated.

I have found that the Black Hills and West Yellowstone (including Island Park and Big Sky) are both great for family and friend outings with very nice trail systems and options for dining and night life. Riding to suite everyone's experience level.
A great mix of climbing and powder I give thumbs up to the Big Horns and Snowy Range.
I didn't ride it all, but Rabbit Ears had endless powder and incredible boon docking.
Revelstoke was as extreme as it gets. Great powder and everything was either going up or going down......Get a guide.
Durango CO area was also high on the challenging list, but we didn't ride very far.
Hmm, I think that is every place I've been.
