What's Washington all about?

I've been offered a job in the Bremerton area and trying to decide if it's a good move. We currently live in Bozeman, MT. The riding here is really good, both dirt bikes and sleds and most good spots are within an hour or so. Is there anything close to Bremerton? I guess I don't mind giving up the sled for awhile but not sure if I could deal with dumping the sled and the bike. What kind of camping, sledding and dirt biking are in the area?

I've heard mixed reviews about the area, any info about the recreation around there would be really helpful and appreciated.

2 hours and your to the snoqualmie area. Snow isnt near as dry as Montana but its still good. You also have mt baker and st helens. Not sure on the on the dirt biking.

Snodawg's not kidding:behindsofa:

I keep thinking...i wonder what Montana's like??

Bremerton is just west across the puget sound from the most leftist city(only second to san fransisco) on the west coast. Be prepared to be inundated by ideology and PCness!

The riding sled/bike is always under attack from some green earth loving org and currently the state is trying to "sweep" out registration fees into the general fund:mad:

oh, but about the riding...kbl6z is spot on! Heavy powder days, sun and snow in the spring and an abundance of moto and camping at your door step...while it lasts anyways.

Been here from Montana for many years now. Still miss it, pretty sure there is no replacement. You will have 2 hours to drive to anywhere and you will have fun. Just have to leave the west side behind you. Greenwater will be fairly close for you. Pick the day to ride based on the storm and it can be unbeatable.

I hope that all of you who are complaining about the "lefties" stealing land have taken the time to write forest service and other government officials, and have given them your opinion. Keep in mind the reason the other side wins is because they are more dedicated to their cause. They don't just complain about it to each other, they take action. They are the ones forming coalitions and grassroot organizations, yet the rebuttal from the majority of snowmobilers is nothing more than name calling and bitching to each other. I posted a direct link to the forest supervisor's email in Wenatchee and hardly anyone has looked at it, yet you all slap each other on the back when someone slams a liberal. We are going to lose our ability to snowmobile because we did nothing to keep it.

Me living in Seattle has what to do with this? Would it help my credibilty with you guys knowing that I am from Montana and only moved here 2 years ago or do you hate "Seattle" that much? We are on the same side, I just am pointing out there is a lot more complaining than doing.

Taxes and liberal politicians will make you wish you were back in MT real soon.

What he said!

I was born and raised on the west of side of this state, moved away after joining the Air Force and came back after 20 years (retired).

I could not believe how different my home state was when I got back...wow.

Everywhere I used to ride gated off, tweakers, tree huggers, taxes...oh the taxes, ugh.

Dont get me wrong, I still love this state, always will...its so beautiful and theres always something to do.

Its just that Ive heard from a lot of native Washingtonians like myself that it aint like it used to be...and a lot of them tell me they're moving to Montana because its the way Washington used to be!

Hows that for irony (considering your original question)?

Thanks for all the info. I love Montana and would love to come back here in the future but right now the job opportunities for me seem to be in Northern Virginia/Washington DC or in Washington State in either Keyport or Bremerton. I'm not sure that there is enough money in the world to make living in DC worth it.

It's nice to hear that there is plenty to do in Washington State. I've never really been much past Spokane so I have no idea what to expect. I guess we can give it a shot for a couple years and see how it goes.

Here's another question for you guys. Is the area south of Bremerton nice? We are looking for a some what rural place to live if thats possible in that area. I don't really mind a commute of 30 minutes or so to work. I think I'm going to fly out there in a couple weeks and look around and I'm just kind of looking for a place to start.

Why would u move here??

It rains all the time and is over crowded, ur closer to dirtbike trails until they shut that down and a couple hrs from the snow when we get it:sun:, x2 with baaaadapple, if the money is better it might be worth it, I too am from Montana and if it had the ocean so close I would move back. Good luck, but remember what ur leaving when u enter the world of liberals... :behindsofa:

Yes! The Bremerton area is nice. Bremerton is a major military hub. Navy i believe, and so your likely to come in contact with other people from Montana. Bremerton is on the peninsula and pretty much at the base of the Olympic mountains. On a clear sunny day the beauty of puget sound cant be beat!! There are plenty of residential and rural neighborhoods near Bremerton but, be prepared for ferry travel as its the quickest route to access the metro area. This can be expensive from what iv heard. In all seriousness this area is great. Of course i have issues with the politics as do most people but aside from the riffraff i am proud to call it home...

But Montana's still an option:face-icon-small-win

since this topic has become a little politically focused. I'm sure coming from Bozeman, you see yourself a fair share of left leaning or even liberal garbage. Probably not from long time locals but from big money out of staters. Frankly, it is no different here in terms of what happens or what is being focused on for the agenda. For me personally, I have always felt that I really liked it here and I have found all the places to go to do things I enjoy in the outdoors, I have found great friends with similar interests and backgrounds. I do write my letters of complaint (including my snowmobile funds sweep ) to the appropriate jack asses. THere is just that one thing on the inside, for me, that doesn't make this feel like my real home but it is my home. You will have to look for the things you
dislike and you will find it, just the same, you will find the things you do like.

Well, I had a decent post written, but I accidentially erased it. To sum it up:

  • Western WA has a ton of Citidiots, all vying for a small number of recreation activities
  • Central and Eastern WA have fewer people and more recreation, but is still governed as though there's a giant population
  • I'm about ready to move back to Idaho. A small population base makes for fewer/simpler laws. WA can never go back to how it was, too many people.

I live near and work in Bremerton and as said above, you are about two hours to riding.

The good:
There is usually a lot of snow. Look at snotel for WA and then the Rockies. Even a bad year in WA there is a lot of snow. It rains on the snow which sucks when you are riding in it but creates a great base. It gives you hero snow all winter long where in the Rockies you generally have to wait until the spring to ride/climb certain areas. I don't know about MT this year, but CO and southern WYO have a sugar/crap base that will probably never bond with the snow above it (huge avo danger and easy stucks). This doesn't happen in WA, the warm weather and rain allow the snow to all bond together into a super base. Elevation, most of the riding within 2 hours of Bremerton is 5500 feet or below. Your sled will scream with all that extra air. Tight technical hill climbs are easy to find, everything is steep and the trees are close together.

The bad:
The snow quality is all over the board and can change daily. I grew up in the Rockies (CO) but i have riden CO, WYO, ID, MT and the snow there is much drier and the riding there is less weather dependent. In WA we will have a cold snap bring 3 feet of "dry" snow and the riding will be awesome, but you never know how long that will last because the warm weather will come back, its just a matter of time. You can have 25 degrees with three feet of powder one day the next day be 35 degrees and raining. We are lucky if we get good snow and it stays cold for a week. I had never seen it rain on snow until I moved to WA but that has a trade off for some good things as mentioned above.

Hey guys,
As you can tell we are kind of fed up with the way things are going here in our beautiful state of Washington, but There is a lot of rural areas just south of Bremerton and there is good motorcycle riding in Belfair only about 30 min south from Bremerton on hwy 3. Port Orchard, Purdy, Belfair all good rural areas to live. I will say as soon as my wife is ready I will be moving to Idaho or Montana, I love Washington (at least what it use to be) but I can't wait to get out.

The dirt bike riding is awesome, some of the best in the country. Ton's of great MX tracks and single track. We drive 4-6 hrs to ride in washington all the time.

But honestly your current state is probly better for guys like us. Is the money worth it?

Might have a lake house for rent an hour south of Bremerton. Lots of dirt biking. Close to Olympic Mountains, lots of camping near the Sound or lakes and forest. Lots of shellfish, coastal rivers with some good fishing and closer to fishing the straits. The ocean isn't too far away for beach activities and razor claming.
