Whats in your pack...........

how to care

i will have to learn to post pics, i will post my bag later, one thing that i do to make room is on my shovel handle i wrap about 8ft of duct tape around the handle then below that i do the same with the electrical tape and then i wrap about 6ft of wire and then eletrical wire for fixing burnt wiring. works good for keeping things organized, shovel is always in my pack this saves some room in the pack, another think i see people carry is a lighter. i carry two mini torches, i think they are made by welder same company as the soidering irons. i also wrap some soider around the shovel handle and cover it with some tape, works good, had to do a fix on a sled this week, crimped wire broke so i just fix it, just a couple of things that i just used this week and thought i would post.
great topic

Excuse the heck out of me. But I want others to share and learn. That is why I asked. With all the packs out there,I am sure that some are better suited to our sport than others.....Is not the pack just as important than what is inside?

I think we both got off on the wrong start................

I was not trying to jump your chit.......... I took your post the wrong way, I am sorry. It came across as if you were done discussing items to carry and wanted to change the topic.

I just didnt want to see this thing head down another path. Your right, a pack is just as important and would be a good addition to this thread.

As for me a Dakine Poacher, size fits my needs, it was comfortable and the price was right.

For backpacks i would say a ABS that suits your needs for capasity.Definently pricy but worth it. One idea though for people who like to highmark is to put your non essentials in a old helmet bag and when you are climbing take it out and put it in a safe spot. This way you dont have to carry it all up the hill. Just remember to pick it up before you move on.

The pack is basic and designed for emergency gear only, its thin and small the way I think they should be for mountain snowmobiling.

its so thin I dont catch on branches when boodocking, and its is hardley noticeable, at the end of the day I do have a slight digging sensation near my right armpit that I can't adjust away but I'm built a little wierd my right leg is about an inch longer than my left so my back bends wierd to accomodate that.

I carry, shovel, probe, (all inside nothing outside) extra goggles, matches, lighter, fire fuel goo, extra mid layer and I still have room for shedding my inner layer (I wear base, inner, mid, shell) and 1 pair of gloves. I still have some room without stretching the limits of the pack.

I ride with the older version of this pack looks the same design just new materials/colors.

I paid $20 for mine at an outlet store, the normal price was $120. I couldn't believe my luck finding the exact pack that I was going to buy, being blown out at an army surplus outlet - good day!

I've routinely used this pack 25-35 trips a year for the past 9-10 years. I did have to do a little patching on the bottom as the edge of my shovel handle eventually wore a hole in the bottom. No complaints would buy it again! and highly recommend it. I still wear this pack after purchasing a Klim pack designed for sledding (that fits odd and is a terrible design. and an SOS pack very nice but too large and baggy when not full and had a "clip on " bag with it that I didnt like for sledding.

if your interested I have the new Klim pack for sale

I hear you, the Klim pack is worthless. That is what led me to post the question. There are hundreds of packs out there.I did not want to send $$$ on something I was not going to use or be unhappy with. The fit has to be tight and trim,I spend to much time in the trees. All the gear in the world is not going to help you,if you can't stand to wear the pack it is in.

Packables

My pack is a 22l Vario abs pack some of this stuff is on my sled. On myself is my Avy beacon

GPS
Spot locator
probe
shovel
saw
Pen flares
first aid kit
water proof matches
rope
electical tape
zip ties
compass
water or gatoraid
granola bars
sandwich
some kind of candy

I have a 6x8 blue tarp that folds down pretty small. Among all of the other stuff, it fits in my Ogio 3-6 pack.Could be used as a shelter, or an extra layer around yourself.Just another idea.............. :beer; :beer;

I ride with the SOS pack, and love it.
I personally think its a more astheticly pleasing pack (I know that its not that important to most, but I like to look good)
The best part about it is the inside pouch for shovel handle and probes.
And there isnt currently anything in my pack because im trying to build a new list with the help of this thread.;)
