What's in your Backpack?

I'll have to look into that winch type, sounds like it would be just the thing with enough good cord.

I thought of some of the lightweight snowshoes Cabalas has, not sure yet. Sure would make things easier than wading thru snow......

Some great info on here.
I read somewhere that it's a good idea to carry a lighter or other fire starting device in your coat pocket. If you dump into a lake, you're likely going to have to lose your pack to stay afloat. If by chance your pack sinks with all your fire-starting gear in it your DEAD! Even if you do manage to get out of the water.
As for the flare, I've carried one for years. It's a marine type so it's moisture resistant. They have a shelf life so you do have to replace them over time. Luckily never had to use one.
Snowshoes.......I keep thinking about getting some but I'm gonna have to start pulling a trailer to haul anymore gear.

-Flare
-Extensive First Aid Kit.

The most important thing in my pack is the air bags. I fear avys above all else. EW

I have a fairly large pack, so i keep a lightweight sleeping pad in it. If someone is hurt, insulating them from the snow is key. They also can be used to make really good splints if that is needed. Anyway, pad is in the first aid category for me.

I added mule tape this year, I found a neat little tin just a bit bigger then a copenhagen snoose tin. I coiled up the mule tape in there and it must hold about 500' of the stuff

sure packs small and weights like nothing, holds 2500 lbs too!!

Large Camel Back (don't remember which one..but it's big enough to fit my m2 w/a 70-200mm lens)

so..

Water
Probe
Shovel
Cell
A couple granola bars
Bunjee's & Straps
Adjustable Wrench, and some of the more commonly shorties (10mm ect)
a thick pair of gloves (I usually ride w/Spring Gloves)
A couple Zip ties
Small foldaway Pocket knife with serrated edge

and depending on the weather and or time I think i'm going to be out
Extra goggles with different tint.

Going to add a
lighter, and a
gps this year.. really need the gps I got lost once last year when it started to snow really hard and my tracks were getting covered up as quick as I was making em.
Duck tape (and or electrical tape)

kokanee
doobies
smokes
lighter
a sandwich or 2
saw and shovel
spare gloves

As far as the winch, another source is Northern Tool. Snowmark has one. I strap Denali Shoes to my tunnel. Haven't found a great way to mount them yet. They have tail extensions for deep snow, but the smaller size is fine for trudging through the trees to help unstuck someone or finding wood.

I also prefer spam as an emergency food. It is food isn't it?

ive carried a couple for 2-3 years now. havent gone off in the pack yet.....
guess i should pull em out and make sure they'd still light

I've got flares that came with my bear banger (summer activities) kit. They're small and launched by a spring loaded launcher about the size of a pen. I keep the flares and launcher in an old oakley ballistic sunglass case.

I didn't use to carry much at all then.....I spent a night up top with 12 other guys at -20 cause we couldn't see Chit and our GPS screen froze so when I got back I added a few things now I have this

Escape 15 ABS bag as always
fire starters X 3
water
Crank flash light
mini binoculars
Lighter
Granola bars, Beef Jerky, Some chocolate, some mixed nuts
GPS/ FRS combo
Leatherman knife
pocket knife
candles
space blanket
cell phone
Truck keys

on the sled I have
a tunnel bag/back pack from Skidoo
a shovel and probe
50' of 12 part rope
first aid kit
extra hoodie, belaclava, 2 pair of gloves, spare goggles and a toque
more water
gatoraide
a hot dogger
chainsaw in a can
dry foods, soup, hot chocolate mix etc.

sounds like lots but I have spent the night in a shelter we made and was grateful that we had all of the things we needed to make it thru the night quite comfortable.

later....
