ive carried a couple for 2-3 years now. havent gone off in the pack yet.....
guess i should pull em out and make sure they'd still light

I'm thinkin about packing one or two... probably stuff 'em in a PVC tube so they don't get wet and mashed up.

Been leery of backpacks since a buddy of mine went over the bars. He was going down a steep drop and when he landed on the backpack,he broke his back. I was not riding with him when it happened, but it was no fun getting him off the hill.Just my .02.

A few years ago I had a buddy break his back. He had to ride home in the back seat 1 hr and was in pure torture. Ever since then I have thought that everyone should have a couple Lortabs or percs in their FA kit.... that is if you can control yourself :D

What you carry comes down to where you ride and how extreme you get. I;ve been in some real bad situations a few different times. The worst was spending New years eve on the mountain in a canyon we didnt want to be in. Took about 30 hours to get out.

The nights are LONG and cold. You sleep for 30-45min at a time and wake up shivering.
You need plenty of food, a way to boil water, good flash lights (I like the LED kind you strap on your head), good saws for cutting fire wood because you go threw A LOT of wood. The other most important tool is a cell phone. If you still have or can find and old style analog phone that works the best in the mountains. The signal will bounce its way out untill it finds a tower. When you dial 911 it goes into emergency service and takes priority over all calls in the area. We made 40-50 calls to 911 that night and got our lad/lon readings to them. Any old phone will work, you dont need service to dial 911 and take a car charger to charge the battery in it.

One other small life saver tool is a small hand winch. I have one that weighs 4-5 lbs and can lift 1000lbs I have 100 ft of 10mm climbing cord thats rated at 3700lbs. That tool saved my butt twice now.

This may be over kill for most but if you like to boondock there are days when your luck runs out. Between my pack and my sled I carry everything thats been listed and more. Havent seen anyone list snowshoes yet......I know I'm not the only one that carries them but I've never seen anyone else with the on there sled except two of the guys that went camping with me on New years eve:) Eric

5 years ago I flipped end over end and broke my pelvis in 3 spots broke 3 ribs and dislocated my sholder. I make sure to have some strong pain killers in my pack now :) Eric

Ahhhhhh..............

Nothing.....................
I need to get on that right now. I'll move from the dirt to the snow.
Add a bunch of stuff and be on my way...............

The winch I'm assuming is a block and tackle type, sounds like a good idea. What is make of yours, care to share?

I've thought about a smallish pair of snowshoes, just not sure where I'd carry them.

The winch was bought at Menards. its a small hand wich that is a ratchet style. If you are fimilar with a "come-a-long" its like that but it folds up and fits in to a pouch that is about 6"long 4" wide and 3"tall. It came with a steel cable on it but I removed that and made a couple small changes to it.

There is a company that made/sold folding snowshoes and you can fidn them on e-bay from time to time. I just have a pair of modern style shoes that were strapped on the back of my tunnle which was a 162 so i had the room. Eric
