Whats going on with my 03 RMK 800?

A few weeks ago we went up and rode a day in some awesome powder on my 03 RMK 800 VES. On the way back to the trailer I found a hole in the coolant line from the thermostat to the bottle. It was close enough to the end I just took the clamp off, cut the hose and put the hose back on and clamped it. It boiled over twice on the way back, but managed to catch it and stop both times and throw snow on the motor.

Now I am finally getting around to working on it, I haven't ridden it since then (end of January/beginning of February). Monday night, I went to crack the cap on the bottle and a bunch of coolant came bubbling up and out the reservoir. The bottle appeared to be empty. I started it and let it run for a few minutes and I thought I would then let it sit a few days and see what would happen tonight. Tonight, there was coolant in the bottle, and when I went to crack the cap, there was pressure that instantly shot coolant out.

Do I just not have all the air out of the system? Or is there a bigger problem that I am not seeing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.

This happened to me a few weeks ago. I was quite worried I had a bad head or gasket. I started the sled, ran it up a short driveway and into the garage. Looked like my coolant was low, so I opened the reservoir to add some and SPLASH, coolant came flying out. I think I was a bit low on coolant, running cold for a minute or two with the thermo closed may have cause some air to move through the system. I warmed it up with the top off the res and filled it up. Haven't had a problem since.

The bigger problem may be that to high temperature O-rings on top of the cylinder, leak. Another bigger problem is that the nut that holds the water pump impellar on the shaft, has backed out sufficiently to allow the impellar to contact the bottom side of the housing and freeze up. The nut backing out is the more likely cause. In that case, you would probably find that you have no coolant circulation to your rear radiator.

Check water pump belt first. Broken belt has exact symptons that you describe. Do the coolers get warm before it boils over? If not, another indication it is not circulating water. If belt OK the check the impeller.
